my gag reflex is also very bad. i have to wash my hands and use my finger to massage my right tonsil. i had 2 cases of tonsillitis in the Fall of 09 and ever since then my right tonsil has been swollen with tonsil stones growing almost every day. i can feel when they are there and also taste them when i swallow. whenever i see them i feel like they must come out before i get sick. i was able to get a few pieces out, but i would really like to know what it's like to not have them at all. i gargle with warm salt water but it never seems to do anything. when i gargle i like to move my mouth as if i'm saying "OWOWOWOW" while im gargling. any other advice?

I have had tonsil stones since I was seven. I have OCD and am obsessed with them. I spend hours a day thinking about them.
I find that a cosmetic mirror that has a magnifying side to it helps. I usually use a flashlight and pop the stones out with a q-tip I hold in the other hand.

Glad I found this thread. I've had tonsil stones, since I was a young child. I'm mid-thirties now. I usually just put up with the stones until they get big enough for me to pick them out of my throat with my tongue. But, as I get older, they keep getting bigger and harder to dislodge. And I can tell there are more behind the ones I pick out. I just bought a waterpik. Sounds like I should be careful with it. I'll have to use the lower pressure pik first. Then, I'll see if I can prevent them. From what I've read, it sounds like gargling with listerine could help prevent the stones.
Good luck to all with getting rid of this unwelcomed distraction.

I am 34 years old. I have had these tonsil stones for years. recently, my right side of my mouth is inflamed. I am in some discomfort! should I go see a doctor or wait it out?

Ugh. these things are So gross and they are driving me nuts. NO ONE else I know except my father gets them. they smell and taste SO bad. I currently have one in my right tonsil I can feel and taste but cannot get out. i have tried cotton swabs, toothpicks, straws, gargling. all im doing is making my throat bleed really bad. ive become onsessive about it because I cannot stand the taste in my mouth! I can see it. but when i poke it its like i push it back and it hides. ive torn apart my throat trying to get it out. and I cant! Ive used dull tweezers and got some of it out but it seems theres several small peices.

hahaha...some comments here are so funny, read mine. One time I was googling white balls in back of throat...can you imagine my 12 year old son when he saw this in the history????lol...anyways I am trying a bunch of stuff on here and will try the apple cider soon...thanks..they are stanky for sure and if you like to smell them after knowing how bad they smell...you are a smell-freak...lol

Ive had these tonsil stones for about 5 years now. At first I had no idea what they were. I would spit them up out of nowhere and then my sister told me she was having the same problem. We both discovered it around the same time, so I assumed that we had some type of contagious disease!!! I asked my doc and he said it ws just food debri. I later found out what they really were...and they are no joke!! I am very self conscience because of this. I literally push on my tonsil and it pours out of several different holes. I now pick it out every night because I cant stand the thought of it being there!!! Its so disgusting and I just want my tonsils out NOW. I have it on both tonsils...and its amazing how large the crypts are. My sis and I both suffered from chronic tonsilitis as kids and thats why we have it so bad. My hubby swears that he has never smelled anything bad on my breath...but I am still very self conscience about it. I never go anywhere w/out gum. I feel like a prisoner in my own body!!! I have nightmares about these things and I dont know what to do!!

I recently noticed a lump in my throat and naturally thought the worst, "the c word". Then I started reading other peoples comments. Unable to see any stones I purchased a small light and mirror. After a trip to the doctor and antibiotics, two weeks of hell, I got it. It was a big one about the size of a raisin. What a relief. Don't give up, just keep after them.

I am almost over having a really bad tonsil stone case this week. My remedy was that I gargled salt water once in the morning and once before I went to sleep, however I also gargled about twice during the day when it was the biggest. The salt water caused it to dissolve and now it is almost completely gone. Avoid sugar and honey and practically anything sweet as it will irritate the tonsils and throat, causing the tonsils to swell up. It is best to drink fruit tea with no sugar or honey added to it for a quick recovery.
My case was caused by me being sick with a cold and then going on a big cleaning spree, which caused the tonsil stone to show up.

This will help,
1. take time to sniff spit and snort out all phlegm. You can also sniff small amounts of water to clean your nose. Dunk face in cold water. The shock will make your nose run. Dont eat bogies. Spit phlegm out, dont swallow.
2. Clean teeth throughly and tongue 2 x daily
3. Mouthwash, cheap alternatives salt water, apple cidervinegar.
4. Stop smoking. Nothing worse than smoky toenail breath.
5. Chew gum daily after meals

Hey, so turns out ive found a sort of way to remove them without fussing around with stuff. It worked well for me, and mine were stuck well in there, to the point that a finger and cotton swabs could not remove them. Im going to try and describe what i do to get rid of them:
1. open your mouth, and take a regular inhale.
2. Hole your nose, and take the same, regular inhale.
3. Tighten your throat - everyone has control of the muscles in their throat, but the tightening is produced as you swallow, so just immitate the tightening that your throat does when you swallow.
4. Whilst holding this tightness in your throat, and holding your nose, inhale again, and there will be a deep throat sounding rasping noise. Do this, and try to focus the inhale so that air passes over which ever side of your mouth which the tonsil with the stones is on.
5. Keep doing this, and checking every so often, so see if the stone has moved. For me, they went from invisable, to protruding, and then i coughed them out after about 1 minute of air sucking.
Give it a go - it worked for me, and mine were stuck pretty tight.

In developing countries, this is often confused with central planning. Financial control does not mean the waste of precious management resources on verifying petty expenses. Nor does it mean a budget which goes to such details as how many tea bags will be consumed by whom and where. Managers in developing countries still feel that they are being supervised and followed, that they have quotas to complete, that they have to act as though they are busy (even if they are, in reality, most of the time, idle). So, they engage in the old time central planning and they do it through the budget. This is wrong.

I too have been suffering these 'devil balls' for years. I am 25, but remember coughing up what felt like bits of peanuts in the morning. I constantly feel like I have something in the back of my throat, but I can never see a tonsil stone. I am going to pressing on different spots in the back of my throat and see what happens. I coughed up 2 of these disgusting balls this month, but I don't want to wait to cough them up. Anyone suggest exactly where to apply pressure? Are they inside your tonsils or just below it? I have these smallish looking holes back the the base of my tongue. Is this where they are coming from? Ugh, I feel so ashamed when I talk to people. I constantly chew mint flavored gum. I can taste them even when I drink water. This is a nightmare, because it seems like my breath really really stinks!

I had my TONSILS REMOVED AT AGE 2 but still had tonsil stones. My boyfriend told me my breath was very bad so I went to the ENT. He pulled 2 white things from my mouth and said I had tonsil stones. I have a heavy post nasal drip and reflux, which also creates mucus in the throat. I believe that is what is aiding in the formation of the stones. I see I have them again. Thanks to this forum, I purchased a blemish extractor from Sephora, a bendable LED book light, Mighty Bight, and some alcohol for disinfection. After 2 days and many tries I was able to get the large one out - it was embedded in there. I still have not been able to remove the small one but will continue to try. I also purchased a pulsating nasal instigator. I haven't received it yet. I am hoping that will cut down on the drip.

for better breath use cloves.. chew on them. to get rid of the tonsil stones, make yourself gag. I read it could be candida, a fungus that can grow in your body. To get rid of that I may have to take Treelac and change my diet. That's all I know so far.

I started getting tonsil stones about the same time that I developed a serious gluten allergy that is most likely celiacs. Food allergies can cause a lot of crazy problems that you wouldn't think would be related. I know that milk protein does increase mucus. They were getting ready to put tubes in my 4 year olds ears when the ENT told me to try cutting out milk protein. It took about 5 weeks but worked. Then, when I reintroduced milk, the symptoms came back. I can never see my tonsil stones - they seem to be in the very back and my tonsils are so big and have deep holes. My ENT told me to gargle every day. He said he doesn't care what I gargle with that it is the vibration that gets them out. I like to gargle with apple cidar vinegar, sea salt and water mixture. I've been gluten free for 1 month - hoping that helps too.

BTW - my ENT said one of his patients coughed up a tonsil stone on the back of someones neck at church. Please cover your mouth when you cough!

YES! I use to smoke weed heavily and I got these frigging things. I recently quit, and didn't notice these white little sick things had left/ Other day I smoked some weed and I got them again. I don't like weed anymore, I wake up feeling like I've been punched in the face, dehydrated, and get those white balls. I definitely link the two for me.

Finding this site was a revelation. I've had these horrible things all my life. I told my GP when I was about 14 and she just looked at me like I was mad. I have never dared mention them to a living soul since then. I am so ashamed and embarrassed and constantly wondering if I have bad breath. Is there a way to test if you have bad breath (other than breathing into your hand and then smelling it??). I am going to speak to a nutritionalist about this now. I'll come back and post her response. In the meantime I am going to start drinking gallons of water to see if that helps! :-S

K commented on 22 Aug 2010, 20:44:04
I have these as well. They are awful and embarassing. I am constantly concerned that my breath does not smell good to others and am obsessed with trying to see them in the back of my throat. I have found that smoke cigarettes definitely causes them for me. I have also been using listerine whitening mouth wash to gargle with because it has peroxide in it. I really want to get my tonsils out but have not talked to a dr. about it because it is embarassing and I do not think they remove tonsils just because of this issue.

At A Loss commented on 26 Aug 2010, 10:57:31
I have had dragon breath for years and years. I have always kept my mouth and teeth extremely clean, and I scraped my tongue until it was sore. I've gargled with peroxide, and it seemed to help sometimes, but that nasty taste always came back. There was nothing that would even touch it!!!! When I chewed gum, the gum ended up tasting like the rest of my mouth. I wanted to cry, and I did. The thing is, I never saw any kind of stone until just a few months ago when I coughed and sprayed some out of my mouth. They were like pieces of a peanut, very small. I didn't know what the hell they were or where they came from. I still didn't connect them to my dog breath. Actually, it's worse than dog breath...the dogs don't even want to be in my face! Later, I remembered reading something on the web about tonsil stones and how bad they smelled, and it just occurred to me that this might be my issue. So...the next time I saw one of the little crumbs from hell, I took a whiff. I thought "yeah...this is it". I still can't see any stones in my throat or on my tonsils, but I was investigating it in the bathroom mirror and stuck my finger in one of the crevices of my tonsil and it stunk just like one of those stones. Now I don't know what to do. I have used a water pik to rinse out the crevices and it still stinks in there. As of last nite, I cut out dairy, which is a big deal for me. I love cappuccinos and cheese and irish creme liqueur and butter. A couple of weeks ago I started using a neti pot because I read part of the problem could be sinus related and I know I have post nasal drip. I don't think an ENT would remove my tonsils at my age, especially for this reason. I gotta tell ya, I'm miserable. My throat also feels clogged up much of the time, especially after one of my giant irish cappuccinos....hmmm dairy.

At A Loss commented on 26 Aug 2010, 11:03:16
hey, I forgot to mention...I smoke weed.....never connected it to the TS. I guess I'll cut that out too for awhile and see what happens. Also, there was a time in my life several years ago that I did not have bad breath. I noticed my sinuses were extremely clear at the time, and I was using a water pik that had a tongue scraper on it. I would mix listerine and water and scrape my tongue with the mixture. I've done all that since then and it hasn't worked like it did before. Something is obviously missing this time.

relieved UK commented on 06 Sep 2010, 05:02:36
thanks to this thread I just got mine out with a hair pin, one with a round bit on the end so it's not sharp. It took a few attempts cos I kept gagging and my tongue kept getting in the way but I stretched the side of my mouth and sneaked the hair pin in the side and poked it and it came free quite easily. You're right about the smell, good god!!

guest commented on 12 Sep 2010, 12:08:34
CAUSE: mucus, debris, and bacteria being allowed to accumulate and dry up in the pockets of tonsil tissue. Post-nasal drip + dehydration + pollen season=drying goo in your tonsils. Smoking probably makes it worse.
PREVENTION: drink a lot of water and USE A SALINE NASAL SPRAY. Go nuts with the spray! CURE: You all seem to know what to do. Try using a chopstick and then gargle with Listerine.

If you have a set of hot rollers for your hair, I have used one of the "clips" from a hot roller to press on my tonsil to remove the stone. It is like a giant smooth bobby pin. Rub it across your tonsil with some gentle pressure. I notice the nasty taste more after drinking coffee.

guest commented on 13 Oct 2010, 18:08:45
If you're coughing them up, there are MORE... and they aren't visible. People think they're in the back of their throat.. They're not. They're on the sides in front of the tonsil in a large pocket (crypt) you cannot see unless you use a Q Tip to move the skin curtain out of the way. I just realized this today... I pryed back that skin flap just in front of the tonsil, and guess what I saw!!!! Yea. Tons of little nasty horrible stones!!! I scooped them out with a Q Tip, the tonsil is VERY delicate, it bleeds from a Q Tip!! Anyway, once you realize where they are hiding, you can get them out. I have a water syringe too. Pull back that flap gently, you'll see them! Then press on the side of your throat in front of the skin flap and it forces the bigger ones out and scoop them up. Then use a water pick or irrigation syringe (shoots water) and rinse the crypt out and it'll dislodge more small stones and try to scoop them out too. It's so gross, I really am paranoid now about that smell being in my mouth. I have good hygene, gargle peroxide & mouthwash every day.. for years I've been doing this and I still have them, but I think just on one side. Tomorrow i'm buying saline nasal spray, Smart Mouth oxygenating rinse & getting some grapefruit seed extract online which is a homeopathic remedy against bacteria growth. I like the Apple Cider vinegar idea.... I'm waging full war!!!

I have never tried what has been suggested, but I know two ways that really helps. The first one is that you boil hot water then you put salt in a cup and pour the water in. Gurgle at the back of throat and spit out also the second one is get a cotton bud and gently roll at the back where they are and you should see loads come out. Well anyway that really worked for me that's why I don't have them any more

I obsess about these things. I use an LED keychain light and a chopstick and lift up vertical skin folds in my throat to get to my tonsil stones.
It is fall right now and my allergies, post nasal drip and tonsil stones are at their worst of the whole year. Consequently, I strongly believe that allergy sufferers are more likely to be tonsil stone victims. I like to control them with a nasal rinse. I got mine at walmart for about ten dollars. It is like a neti pot on steroids, uses salt water and flushes the sinus/nasal cavities with greater force than the neti pot.... I quit smoking two months ago. I got them as a smoker and as a non-smoker. I don't believe in a smoking correlation, however, as a non-smoker I can sure smell that inorganic waste smell. And I can more easily pick up thqat smell in other people.... like chewing on a cat turd when they talk! I wish it was more socially acceptable to say< Hey! that stench pouring out of your mouth is from tonsil stones.... Google it!>
But I digress... helpful suggestions:
treat your allergies
take clairitin D
gargle with 50% H20 50% hydrogen peroxide
USE a SINUS RINSE
poke those nasty stink balls out!!!!!
Happy Hunting :)

Food Allergies commented on 09 Nov 2010, 14:22:51
I had terrible stones from middle school on. It was not until I was in my 40s that I had increasingly intense and repetative enough reactions to certain foods that I started to avoid these foods. Allergy testing results are contradictory for me. These foods are pork, nuts and shellfish. Since I began avoiding these foods, headaches that seem related to rear sinus pressure resulting in neck/shoulder pain and the tonsil stones have disappeared. I recently opted to eat pork and have a chocolate with nuts in it at the same event. Within days I had to express stones from tonsils that are now much smaller than when I ate the above foods on a regular basis.

I recently started using Alkalol and I still have stones. I take a flashlight and a pile of Q-tips and gently push next to the holes, I have a few on my right side that collect many balls. I just keep gently digging and pushing with a Q-tip till I can't get any more out or see any more, I have to do this every few days!! Sick I just want them gone already so I can make out with my man!!

Old advise commented on 06 Dec 2010, 05:27:01
My old relatives have told me that what the tosil stones are is old plack that was formed around the walls of your lungs and is finally coming out. To let it run it corse on it's own. Unless you keep getting sick then they will not go away. I took them completely out with a syringe. I suctioned them out. I had the same problem with my sinus cavities. After a while they also went away on it's own. This advise was given to me by my old family members. This was my experience. Don't know if it's a fact. Then again Doctors don't seem to know what they really are either.

I have suffered from these nasty critters [tonsil stones] for years. I just accepted that I would always have them. However, since using the tonsil stone remedy I learned about on tonsilstones.net, I have not experienced even one tonsil stone.
