I went swimming about a year ago and, when attempting to do a backflip off the diving board, I landed on my back and noticed something in my mouth. It was a pretty large white lump. I had no idea what this was but it smelled really bad. I fished a few more out from both sides of my throat using my finger and a cotton swab. I am glad that I can put a name to these disgusting things. I have had them off and on since this first experience and most recently the throat pain has been really extreme and I noticed blood around the stones. Is this a more serious problem? I don't drink, smoke, have allergies, nor am I prone to any kind of infection...

I dip a q-tip in dr. Tichner's concentrated mouthwash and rub it on the tonsil. I then induce a sneeze and itcomes out! So gross! If that doesn't work, I gargle with the concentrated mouthwash and it comes out again with a sneeze. The mouthwash is very strong but it works for me,

I suffer from these white/yellow horrible smelly things as well. I'm so glad I found out what they are and what to do to help remove them. The Tonsil Stones hurt sometimes and have the worst smell. Thanks for the site and your comments.

you can get your tonsils out if u have a prolonged problem with tonsil stones.... i asked my doctor the other day..... but i just use my finger and like push from a little further out from my tonsil gap and towards my throat....and that usually pops them out..... but i get them a lot too and they are nasty......i also use a q-tip and almost like dig at it..... its weird.... lol but i'm glad i'm not the only one with them

I'm so glad I'm not alone!
I am 17 and I have had these things for a while but more frequently now that I eat more often because I am a "growing boy" but I noticed they really come up when my mouth gets dry or when I bring up mucus. Its annoying, puts a bad taste in my mouth and makes me gag. I hate these clumps..or as my mom calls them "puss pockets". My friends think I'm weird and I won't dare let a girl know about my situation but I need help =(

I started noticing tonsil stones in my early 20's (I'm 30 now) and went to two ear, nose and throat specialests after my regular doctor told me they were anything to worry about. The first ENT doctor took one look in my mouth for all of 5 seconds and told me my tonsils we enflamed and the only solution was to have them taken out. Not being happy with the 5 second diagnoses I went to the 2nd ENT doctor and this guy took two long, flat wooden sticks and squeezed my tonsils with them. I was amazed when he showed me all of the tonsil stones he squeezed out of there. It was like he totally cleaned out my tonsils. He told me I had Chronic Cryptoses and the only cure was to have my tonsils taken out. I wasn't very fond of the idea since my regular doctor had told me that the older you get the worse the recovery is and the more dangerous it is so I never had them taken out and still get the stones. The strange thing is that I've gone for long periods of time without getting them and then all the sudden they will appear again. I use a Q-tip to squeeze them out but sometimes I can feel them down lower in my tonsils almost down in my throat and those ones are very hard to get out. I hate these things and hope that they go away for good...soon!

Im 23 and have had tonsil stones since I was in elementary. Im happy to know Im not the only one. Honestly, everyone has their own methods of removing them. Right now, I use a pointy cutip used for makeup for the easy stones. But for the deep ones you can't get out, I found that using a water syringe (aka water jet) with warm salt water works well. Just fill up the water syringe and put it in the tonsil hole and start squirting and it loosens it. Yes you will gagg, but its actually better to gagg because it makes you cough and it gets the stones out easier. So DON"T be afraid to gagg. ALSO, keep your mouth and tongue CLEAN!!! Get everything if you can off your tongue every night before you go to bed. And when brushing your tongue, go back as far as you can go regardless if it makes you gagg because I have coughed up a lot of stones by just gagging. And changing your diet and not eating dairy is good, Im just now starting to look out for that, so I can't say if its 100% accurate. But Ive read books about this and they said number one thing to change is your diet. Hope this helps

i have suffered from tonsil stones on and off over the past year or so, however, just this past week my tonsils became swollen and were loaded with tonsil stones! I am trying some of these techniques...hope they work

guest commented on 04 Sep 2009, 21:58:03
If tonsil stones are food particles that become lodged in tonsil crypts that are then attacked by white blood cells, adding to the stone, how can Doctors not be more worried? It's like a body fighting constant infection in the tonsils, day in day out. Won't fighting constant infection wear a person out? Like a splinter just left under the skin to fester.

guest commented on 12 Sep 2009, 20:59:39
How can I permanently remove them without a surgery?

guest commented on 15 Sep 2009, 12:59:45
Had them for years. Gargeling with a mixture of warm salt water and hydrogen peroxide a couple of times a week keeps mine away. The peroxide foams them off, the salt water kills the bacteria.

guest commented on 15 Sep 2009, 13:59:20
I think those of you contributing pot smoking and drinking to the stones are kind of correct but way off... Firstly alcohol has antibiotic properties in it, hence a cleaning effect in your mouth. Cannabis has antibiotic properties as well. In particular the CBD cannabinoid. This may cause them to shrink enough to make it through the opening and into an area you can get to them. These form from mucus, dead cells from your mouth and bacteria. Thats it.

I never knew I had tonsil stones and have had them for years until I started to read about them on the internet. I stopped eating crunchy foods like popcorn, apples, nuts, because it seemed as these foods aggrevated the problem. I am in my early 40s and the ENT doctor said it would be no problem to take out my tonsils. I wanted that laser procedure done (the one wher you are awake, like in a dentist's chair, but he said me gag reflex is so sensitive that he thought it would be horrible for me. I am afraid to have the tonsils out at 40. I set up an appointment but not sure I can go through with it now. I have picked out the tonsil stones with , yes a butter knife , which usually works, but sometimes I cut into the tonsil a little. I guess maybe the q-tip would be better or I get them taken out like the doctor suggested.

guest commented on 04 Oct 2009, 18:47:59
Ive had them for years. Using a ear swab, push under the stone and it will pop out kinda like a pimple. Its so gross, I finally had my tonsiles removed.

Victoria commented on 12 Oct 2009, 07:13:40
I went to the doc with mine...before I found this site. No inflammation/redness/swelling--he knew what they were. No antibiotics needed, as I thought would be. About 2 wks later I prodded the one I had out..I thought it was two..only to find out it was 'through' the tonsil', both ends of the thing were showing !! No discomfort, no soreness or rawness after it was removed. Who would have thought? Will be on the lookout for development of more in the future so as to 'nip it in the bud' from developing further. VERY glad I found this site to read about others. (Oh, I used a plastic Dental Pic to remove it)

OMG - I did not know what was happening to me until I did this research. I thank everyone that has provided information on curing tonsil stones. I will write in response to the treatments at a later date once I try them out.
As of the pot smoking, I have been a pot smoker for years. In the last year, I have noticed that I have this gross smelling puss coming from me tonsils... I thought A) WTF? and B) how can I ask anyone... how embarrassing. I am so glad I am not the only one. Well, I have not experienced the stones for weeks... and this weekend I have them again... well low and behold, I have not smoked pot in weeks, until this weekend. There may be something behind this idea. It may not be the cause... but it could be the cause for some.

Brandon commented on 13 Oct 2009, 04:56:55
Tobacco smoke, chew, alcohol, and marijuana smoke all temporarily change the PH of your mouth and surrounding tissues. Especially when combined with sugars including starch and lactose. This allows the deposits to form faster because the acidic enviroment helps the bacteria grow. So do eating late, and not brushing regularly.Doing all of these things will allow them to grow rather quickly.

guest commented on 14 Oct 2009, 07:17:12
My husband has had them since about 2001 but just two weeks ago I realized I had a bunch in the back of my mouth.. I have done all sorts of research and we finally know the name of these disgusting things (the doctor told us years ago that they were calcium deposits that my husband had).
I am completely traumatized and obsessed... I am constantly sticking my finger in the back of my mouth to see if I can get more out. I need to do something about them or I will go crazy! At least this explains why all of a sudden I went from having fresh breath 24/7 to disgusting breath!

Great site. It seems that, like most things, different strategies work for different people. My gag reflex does not allow anything to touch back there. I just started a salt water/baking soda (aka- saline solution) rinse that I hope to gargle and snort each day. The snort is so I can clean out my sinus passageway. This is something people do all the time to stay healthy and fight off the common cold but could it possibly work for tonsil stones as well? I will report back after a while. It's important to note that I cannot see them but if it gag/squeeze/cough they sometimes come out. I guess I don't have many crevices like some other people but my breath is bad, that's a fact, and I attribute it to tonsil stones.

guest commented on 10 Nov 2009, 11:37:53
This coming from a practicing dentist, irrigate them out w/ lukewarm water using a plastic irrigation syringe. It looks a bit like a turkey baster, w/ curved plastic tapered tip. Many dentists give them to patients for self-irrigation of mouthrinses to periodontal pockets as they usually can be used w/ less trauma than any metal syringe. Other way is the water-pik, definately at lowest possible setting and always w/ proper lighting.

I had gotten tonsil stones my whole life, and at 21 I learned what they are and decided to get rid of them. The ONLY way to get rid of tonsil stones is tonsillectomy. Tablets and rinses will not work, period. Two weeks of moderate pain is worth a lifetime from the stones and peace of mind. Don't hesitate to boot the tonsils. Best decision of my life.

guest commented on 30 Nov 2009, 17:07:18
I have dealt with tonsil stones for about 5 years now. It seems that everytime I eat something with chopped or minced garlic they appear more often. Don't know if this has anything to do with it but maybe so.

I just read all this post and not one person has a cure!!!
So, I have no clue if removing the tosils works. I've read that some cases people still have that taste, you know that taste.
1. Floss
2. Toung scrap thing
3. Salt water or alkalol
4. Don't eat 2 hours before you sleep
all of the above twice daly
here are some things that I've read about, but have not tried.
Himilayan Goji Juice
MERC. SOL. 6C
ALKALOL
 Nit acid 200
Baryta Carb 6C
I would try the first three. I going to order alkalol and MERC. SOL. 6C give me 3 weeks and I'll let you people know. As of now these thing come every 2 days for the last 4 years I have to chew more gum it's soooo bad.

That's interesting that exercise was mentioned as one of the remedies. I have had a moderate size stone on my tonsil that has bothered me for over a month, and just yesterday it grew very large and my tonsil became swollen. Thinking that this was some sort of infection, I contacted my doctor and made an appt. for today. Oddly enough, I went to the gym before heading to the doctor's office, and low and behold, when I finished working out I noticed that the stone was gone. So apparently exercise is good for more than just your heart!!!! This might not be the cure all for everyone, but it sure couldn't hurt to give the old treadmill a try!

JJ commented on 16 Jan 2010, 12:12:26
I removed 6 tonsil stones this week and now I think I've given myself a secondary infection. I now have a large white spot above my tonsil that is very painful and won't go away. This happened before but the spot was much smaller and it went any after 2 days. Has this ever happened to anyone else before?

i suffered from tonsil stones for a few years, the smell was horrendous and embarrising, it would even keep me from being intimate because I knew my breath smelled horrible. I tried everything antibiotics, gargling with hydrogen peroxide, mouthwash, gum, to no avail. I also had post nasal drip. Then I tried the Neti Pot, from CVS, looks like a genie lamp. Bought a box of 100 pre-mixed packets as well. I started using it everyday when I brushed my teeth in the morning.
I started out according to the directions, now I use one packet per nostril. IT IS AMAZING!!!!!!! ALL NATURAL AND IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!! It's been 2 years now and I can breathe thru my nosel, no post nasal drip, and NO TONSIL STONES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

I am so glad to have found this forum! The first time I coughed one of these horrible things (I call them chuckles) up I thought it was a piece of brain or a severe infection from my sinuses or something! Anyway, the smell was horrendous. After reading some posts, I decided to try to poke them out with the end of a toothbrush by carefully applying pressure until they 'pop' out, which worked but made me gag. Now I use the narrow end of one of those metal blackhead removers you can get (I got mine at the Bodyshop) and it works a treat! You can fish around in the crevice and it doesn't make me gag at all and most importantly, there is no risk of accidentally stabbing yourself! I have also ordered a Waterpik from Amazon so will try that method aswell. Hope this helps some of you...x

i just noticed what these are, ive had about 6 mabey.. the first one was when i was playing xbox i tightened my neck muscles and felt somthing in mi mouth, i thought it was a peice of vomit or somthing so i spit it onto a tissue and threw it out, second time i was in history class and it just came out into mi mouth and i swallowed it, then the other times were yesterday when i happened appon it online and checked out mi tonsils in the bathroom and sure enuff there was a lil hole with white inside it, after about a half hour of playing with it i got it out and it was really small.. and then i got another peice out later, then today i was in the shower and tightened mi neck muscles and out came another, and when i was playing with mi dog i had another.. they taste really bad but there kinda interesting looking, its really weird to think a ball of stuff that big, mine are the size about 3/4s of a dime, can fit out of a hole in your tonsil

LoveMyWaterpik commented on 17 Feb 2010, 11:17:03
I just figured out that if I WaterPik with water and hydro peroxide then things will start happening - they break and loosen because the peroxide will make them softer.
Then the ones you do not get - the peroxide is still attacking the stone to break it down - and maybe next time it will come out. Anyway, there is less germs.
I do not think it has anything do with food - but with your immunesystem which the tonsils are apart of...
I always get them on one side - where my lympnodes in the neck have been swollen for years. Also the mouth is a germy place in general - so it is important to keep good hygine and not eat to sweet since that grows the bacteria...

guest commented on 26 Feb 2010, 07:06:38
I have noticed that while running or playing sports small "food" pieces would become dislodged in my mouth and I'd spit them out. Now that I have seen these things in the back of my mouth and researched what they are I'm paranoid. I have a bad gag reflex and using Q-tips is not working for me. I'll try these other methods. I've had a upper respiratory issue lately so maybe that has brought them on.

guest commented on 06 Mar 2010, 15:16:38
I think that it is evident that that the "stones" are closely related to throat irritation and sinus drainage. Don't know when the nasty things first occured in me, have had cronic sinus and throat problems for years. Finally found a doctor that went to the source of my problems not just treating my symptoms. For me the sinus and throat irritation problems were a result of my body not responding well to artificial sweeteners and corn syrup sweeteners. By avoiding these products that cause sinus drainage and irritation in me, I have avoided the "stones" for almost a year. I also swear by probiotics, if you have a white or yellowish tongue, using probiotics to build up the good bacteria to fight the yeasty and icky bacteria helps with the halitosis. Once in a while I have a product with High Fructose Corn Syrup and I almost instantly have sinus drainage and an irritated throat. I had lived with the problem for so long I didn't recognize it. Now, after 2 sinus surgeries and many antibiotics I find I can avoid many of my problems just by watching what I eat. I suggest that those of you with the cronic problem consider what may be the cause of your irritation (smoking pot, food sensitivities...).

I have suffered from tonsil stones since I was about 7. When I got older, I started picking the stones out. I went to a doctor when I was 30 and had my tonsils removed. Guess what? I still have stones only now they are in crypts down my throat that I can't reach with a q-tip or waterpik. My problem is worse than ever before. Having your tonsils removed isn't the answer.

guest commented on 21 Mar 2010, 16:22:35
I noticed that i was getting these little nasty things and they "seemed" to always come back after I had removed one. So after reading this site I decided to take the back of my toothbrush and push around the outside of the crater with some force. Even though I could not see anything in the crater once I pushed on the outside of it to my surprise 4 big clumps come out. It was gross. They were not white they were greyish greenish like they had been in there for a long time. So pushing on the outside of the crater with the back of my toothbrush worked the best for me.

First of all, thank you for this site. Secondly, my heartfelt sympathy to everyone else plagued with these relentless little devil balls. I have had these since I was a teenager but thought they were pus which came to the surface when I had a sore throat (the only time I seem to get them). NOW I have learned of the truly hellish crapola living in my mouth thanks to a doctor alerting me to what they are last week. NOW I can';t get my mind off them.
I tried to use the water pik - stone still there, tonsil bled. Will try cotton swab and/or crochet needle next. If they are still around when I get better from being sick, off I go in search of a surgeon. I will gladly suffer post-surgical pain to be rid of these painful, disgusting bacteria balls.
Good Luck everyone.

I have been manually removing these tonsilliths for a few (5-10) years now.
the best tool I have found is a plastic fork with 3/4 of the prongs broken off, the remaining prong is of course used for the prying. The curve and non sharp tip are key. Also, always use a strong flashlight to guide you.
from personal experience I have found smoking/smoking pot absolutely increases the development rate of these stones. Also, soar throats will cause more stones to develop.
in my experience, gargling with salt water, listerine ect does nothing.
just dont cut yourself, be gentle.

guest commented on 14 Apr 2010, 13:03:54
Maybe smoking and drinking helps them come to the top, because I know mine can go pretty far down lol

The Q-tip thing kind of worked for me. It got rid of most of the stone. I still have some white pocket looking spot where the stone used to be. Does that mean that I didn't completely get rid of the stone?

I have suffered from these nasty critters [tonsil stones] for years. I just accepted that I would always have them. However, since using the tonsil stone remedy I learned about on tonsilstones.net, I have not experienced even one tonsil stone.
