I also get these. I hate them. Thank god for the internet. It doesn't seem to matter what is wrong with you, there is a forum full of people that have the same problem. I sometimes just push on my tonsils with my finger and that pushes them out. It is kind of painful, but less painful then probing my tonsils with things. I do this with anything other my finger it makes me gag. Good thing about that method is I can do it anywhere, at work, whatever, just wash your hands when your done because they will smell bad then also.

I started getting these nasty rocks shortly after I got strep throat. I had never had strep before and I never want it again. Anyway, I thought I had a big problem and I thought this crap was pus. I was wondering why my wife kept pullling away from me everytime I would give her a kiss. I just figured she was cheating on me and that my marriage was over. Also, one of my buddies would feed me gum everyday! I just figured that he liked to share but now I know different because I just recently took a sniff of one of these warlocks and I thought I just pulled dodo out of my mouth! I copied the info below off of a site that might give us all a clearer view of what we're dealing with.... I guess I don't have throat cancer after all so I'm goin' to the store to get me some smokes!
Tonsil Stones (tonsilloliths) are caused by an accumulation of sulfur-producing bacteria and debris that become lodged in the tonsils. This debris (which can include mucous from post nasal drip) putrefies in the back of your throat, and collects in the tonsil crypts (small divots or pockets which appear on the surface of the tonsils).
When this debris combines with the Volatile Sulfur Compounds produced by the anaerobic bacteria beneath the surface of your tongue, along with the tonsil stones it can also create chronic Halitosis (and other stubborn bad breath and taste disorders).
oh yeah, I find that I get them more when I was smoking.

I have been sneezing/coughing these things up once every couple weeks starting a few months ago. I would be sitting at work and cough and it would bounce out of my mouth. Its pretty funny but someday its going to happen with someone watching. I just learned from this site you can pick them out. I want to learn how but when I try to stick tweezers and tooth picks in my mouth I gag. How do you do it?

Has anyone tried ALKALOL? Google it. I'm using it at the moment and am finding it really helpful. But don't think it works alone, for example, i have had to give up numerous foods such as crisps, cereal, nuts, biscuits basically all the foods i love but its worth it if it keeps these things awa. I still get the odd one but that disgusting taste constantly in the back of my throat seems to have gone away...yay! i've had numerous snide comments about my breath in the past and have zero confidence because of this. I'm buying a waterpik soon...I want my tonsils to be mega clean! I've been soaking a Q tip in the alkalol solution and cleaning the crevices in my tonsils (by sticking the Q tip into the hole) and cleaning the whole tonsil, then gargle and also use it for sinus. Spent a fortune on Dr Katz toothpaste and rinse but no effect whatsoever. also suffer with acid reflux...not sure if this has anything to do with it but thought i would mention it.

DOES ANYONE FEEL THEM LIKE AS IF ARE GOING TO COME OUT AND THEY DONT COME OUT NOW MINE ARE NOT VISABLE BUT I FEEL THEM SO ARE THEY BEHIND THE TONSIL OR ON THE RIGHT SIDE BEHING THE SWOLLEN GLAND

guest commented on 26 Nov 2008, 18:44:00
i just tried to get mine out with a straw, and it did not work.

guest commented on 01 Dec 2008, 23:11:11
i used not mind them b/c they were rare and when I felt like there was a foreign object in my throat I could just cough and they'd come up. I've been trying to cough one up for days, and after 2 coming out it still feels like there's something there. I feel like Larry David trying to cough up a pube that won't come out. I can't see them at all. It feels like they're in my throat not my tonsil. FUK!

John D commented on 07 Dec 2008, 00:02:33
I start with a middle or pointer finger and approach from the side of the mouth, avoiding the tongue and gag reflex. I push the outter portion of the tonsile towards that interior/throat direction. I litterally push them out, even if not visible at first.

Ray commented on 31 Dec 2008, 15:24:23
Drink lots of water. That seems to help slow down their reoccurance...

I am 62 and have had bad breath for most of my life since I was informed by co workers who would put tooth paste and a brush in my drawer at work . I would also notice people would cough and turn there head like it was them that had the problem to avoid my problem. One guy said to me what did you eat rotten eggs? All of this added up and I went to ENT docter and he said to remove the tonsils and it should clear it up. Not one time has a dentist ever mentioned this to me that I have bad breath, is that not strange? Operating at 62 is risky but can be done. I use salt water rinse as a gargle and listerine as a gargle which helps but the pockets where stones collect just keep filling up. I have to use the end of a water pick to remove what I can see using a flash light with the bath lights cut off. I am going to investigate the laser surgery as soon as I find out what doctores are trained to do this in my state and if Insurance will pay. If anyone has had this procedure please let me know at pocvalfm@hotmail.com
i feel so sorry for all of you for lost of relationships or friends due to bad breath which is not your teeth. I don't smoke or drink coffee . So help is on the way just keep doing research.

I spoke with my Ear Nose and Throat doctor about how to remove my tonsil stones (I eventually had them removed) and he said to never use any type of sharp object like paper clips or pins. He said that if its on the outside of the tonsil to use a water pic if you can handle it. He said for tonsil stones that are down in the holes of your tonsils to use a looped object. I used a Double-Ended Blemish Extractor by Sephora (You can put that in the search box on their site to see what I'm talking about). The small looped end was perfect for scooping them out. I could tell that I had another stone when my tonsil ached or when my breath started to smell. I never had a tonsil stone on the outside and probably would have never known they were the cause of my bad breath had I not seen it removing itself from the hole in my tonsil. Only one tonsil had the stones.
--I had to have my tonsils removed due to the swelling every few months when I got sick. He took them out immediatly when the tonsil that didn't have the stones started bleeding one time when it swelled. If you do get them taken out to be rid of the tonsil stones, be sure to have someone be in the same room with you when you sleep for the first few nights. It is normal for the scabs to fall off while you are healing, but if you are sleeping you won't know if you start bleeding. They heard me choking and woke me up. I thought it was just spit until I went to the bathroom. I never tasted blood. It took me almost ten minutes to get the bleeding to stop all the way and I thought I was going to die the whole time. The doctor gives you an amount of time that you need to stop the bleeding and if you don't they you need to head to the ER.

I gargle salt water. Another thing that works for me is singing. Sounds strange, but I think the different rates of vibration is what does it. They usually just pop out. I never knew what they were and had never seen one in my throat until tonight. I sang, gargled some salt water, and then just poked at it with my finger a couple times. It came out. This particular one had been driving me crazy for a week. I think there are still more in there, but it's much better feeling than it was before

So glad I found this site, did not know what they were before. Are they very dangerous should I get help from doc or should I leave it as i take them out easily

Usually I can apply gentle pressure with my pinky finger to the underside of my tonsil to push them out. I'm always careful to trim my fingernails first so I don't accidentally slice the flesh in my throat! I've also used the blunt, rounded end of a flat toothpick to fish out tonsil stones that are deeply embedded.

guest commented on 14 Feb 2009, 19:23:27
I've been suffering from tonsil stones for a lil while and the best method for me is to GENTLY press against the tonsil with a q-tip/cottonswab to extract as many as possible.

guest commented on 20 Feb 2009, 21:50:41
I have one tonsil that holds a lot of tonsil stones -- sometimes to the point the tonsil just aches. I've always tried q-tips but they never worked really well and I didn't have the guts to try a toothpick. After reading this website, someone mentioned a bobby pin -- the rounded end. That worked like a charm and what a relief! Someone else on here mentioned exercises... so between the bobby pin and moving my tonsils up and down multiple times, I managed to push and prod all tonsil stones out tonight. I'm 37 and only within the past 4 years have these been an issue for me -- and it seems each year they are getting worse. I've never smoked anything but I do have constant sinus issues. I'm so glad I ran across this site tonight. Thanks so much!!

my sister had her tonsils removed at the age of 31 and it was AWEFUL! said it felt like a blow torch in her throat..couldn't talk, spit, eat, brush teeth, blow nose...and when the scabs loosened (they looked like to surfboards comming out of her throat) she was gagging so bad we almost called 911. I have these nasty stones OUT OF NOWHERE and there's nooo way I'm getting my tonsils out.

There was a post on here asking if anyone here suffered from allergies. I do and I definitely see a link. I developed post nasal drip a couple of years ago and I think this contributes to my tonsil stone problem because I'll go through periods of time (up to 6 months) where I don't get tonsil stones and this is when my allergies are not severe. Anyone else notice a similar trend with theirs?

I just removed centimeters, not millimeters but centimeters, of this horrible white stuff far away in my throat/tonsils... HORRIBLE! My doctor said it was nothing.. but I told him that my breath was horrible and it felt like there was something stuck in my throath. I kept swallowing all day..
Yaaak! I hope it will stay away.. however, I now know that the toothpick really works. Thanks!

guest commented on 26 Mar 2009, 10:31:20
I had noticed them like 2 years ago. I am only 18 and I didn't want to have to deal with constantly poking them out and the awful breath, plus the feeling that something is in my throat. We went to a ear-nose-throat Dr, talked to him, put me on a list, and a year n 1/2 later I got my tonsils removed. So far it hasn't been too bad. Can't eat a lot, hard to swallow. Should be better soon, but I have lost like 15 lbs :)

In Re: Melanie, Austrailia~You may be on to something ! I have mucus producing allergies and smoke pot regularly. Smoking pot makes my allergies worse. Thus more mucus is produced and the story writes itself. I can't believe so many people know about this. Although I've smoked weed for years, I just started noticing them for the last year. I am a fanatic about flossing, Q-Tips and tissue. All of my orafaces need to be free of debri or it drives me crazy. So this really bothers me. I thought I would have a hard time describing this symptom and finding answers online but..WOW... it is more common that I ever could have anticipated. At least now I know what it is and how it can be managed. Thanks every body !!!

stop eating dairy! I've been struggling with these and that's what the problem was... now i have no stink balls, no sore throat and much more energy! Cutting off your tonsils is a band aid solution if the problem is really a food allergy...

guest commented on 14 Apr 2009, 09:22:16
I used all of this combination pretty regularly (TOngue Scraper, water Pik to clean debries in wisdom teeth/back of mouth, Hydrogen Peroxyde Mouthwash) These help prevent more from being created. To prevent them coming, i make sure my sinus is clear at all times. I exhale from the nose sometimes pretty hard to get mucus out, since thats what produces them. Hope this helps

i have tonsil stones too and its really embarrassing. it effects my life so much that i dont like talking face to face, not even to my fiance, i dont go to public functions, or even family ones for that matter. And i can never get rid of them fully. they come out on their own so im not digging for them anymore, but i wish it would stop so i could have my life back.

I am 40 but have only just started to suffer in the last 3 years. I have realised that there is a connection with fizzy drinks. I used to drink loads of Pepsi Max, but since i have cut that out and gone to a fruit juice it has definately helped. Also i have noticed they come back after i have drunk beer. Not a large amount but only a couple of pints of lager shandy. Does anyone else that suffers drik carbonated drinks regularyly ????

for the gaggers out there , swab or buy knumbing spray or babies teething gel on back of throat , it really helps

i cannot explain my happiness/horror at finally discovering what these disgusting things coming out of my tonsils are! i never heard of this before, and thought it had to be cancer or something...lol! so i am so greatful to know that i am not the only victim. there are lots of entries here telling how to remove them (since discovering them on my own i found digging around and pushing here and there with a q-tip works for me), but has anyone actually had their tonsils removed to finally rid themselves of this problem? i had no idea that a tonsillectomy in adult years was much of a problem. i am 32 and had thought of talking to my doctor about a tonsillectomy because i hate these damn smelly disgusting things and would rather go through the pain of sugery than dig these things out each month. i don't know how well the whole gargling with this or that method will work, but is there anyone who's actually had a surgical procedure done to rid themselves of these pests?

guest commented on 13 May 2009, 22:12:46
my tonsil that these stones are coming out of is highly enlarged. is that a factor for you guys too?

guest commented on 24 May 2009, 02:05:31
Is it possible that these things are caused by toothpaste residue?
My chemistry is kinda rusty, but I read an abstract from a group that did a chemical analysis of a tonsil stone. It was mostly Calcium (60%) and phosphate (30%). Calcium phosphate is found in toothpaste, I believe. So perhaps a good brush & floss w/lots of rinsing may help. I notice that folks who do a salt water rinse claim some relief. Could be they are simply washing the CaHPO4 away better?
Just a thought. Docs don't know much about these.

Its comforting coming to this site, but boy do I feel for everyone here. Yesterday was when I found out that I too am a "stoner" I felt that fuzzy feeling, like I had something stuck in my throat whenever I swallowed. This was the 2nd time this year that I felt that, the 1st time I waited for it to go away on its own, but yesterday I looked in the mirror and BAM! I must've crapped my pants when I saw it..so immediately I went online & typed in "white bump in my throat" & sure enough..TONSIL ROCKS came up..I then image googled it & must've crapped my pants again..these stones sure can grow!

I felt relief and fear all at once..I decided to stick my finger on my tonsil, to I guess scrape it off, and it came out- they do smell gross. Aint it sad, our mouths are pooping :( *sigh* After removing it, I felt better, but today while in the car, I felt that fuzzy feeling again. This time I removed it with a toothpick. Anyways guys idk about you but I get goosebumps @ the thought of it..I even checked it out on youtube. BIG MISTAKE..the video is a nightmare!
They say you can use grapefruit seed extract to gargle, so I guess I'll try that soon. I just hope they don't cause any problems in the future. Oh yeh I haven't really had too much dairy lately, but my allergies have been kicking my ass..
Good luck to all of you, & remember we're all in this together! ;p

I have had tonsil stones for as long as I can remember. I use my finger which works really good. I have only seem one other person say they use there finger, I do to. I use pressure to get them out with my finger on the outside of my tonils. I use a small led light and a close up mirror (works wonders) I than use whitening mouthwash because it has peroxide which seems to be slowing them down and gets the germs out of my mouth from using my finger (I of course wash my hands beforehand).

If anyone uses the reach flosser to floss their teeth, it can be turned around, and the smooth end is great for popping the stones out. I guess one could also use the non-bristle side of their toothbrush. It is long enough to reach way back there, and is nice ans smooth so it won't irritate the tonsil. I hate the idea of flushing it out with anything, because the thought of swallowing it is just gross. This way you can collect it and dump it!

I use tea tree oil toothpicks to remove them because tea tree oil is a natural antiseptic and i find that it prevents buildup for a longer amount of time. Also, my synthesis of theories about these little stones ~ which I think correlates with many of the comments above ~ is that they are more common as toxins build up in the body. This explains why many people do not develop tonsil stones until they are older (after twenty plus years of plain old living has resulted in toxins gradually accumulating in a body). It also explains why some people notice them more after eating late at night (your body cleanses... or tries to, while you're sleeping), after eating dairy (difficult for some people's digestive systems to process) or alcohol. It also explains why regularly drinking adequate amounts of water minimizes their presence. If bodies are provided with a means of flushing out excess toxins (i.e. a consistent, adequate supply water), they are less likely to concentrate them in places like our mouths. I think this last point is particularly relevant because it would indicate that a lot of of expensive and/or invasive measures like surgery or special bottled formulas are unnecessary. Good luck to everyone!
