Tonsil Stones

The best way to get rid of Tonsil stones is with a water pic . It blasts them right out of there and it gets the ones that you cant even see . It works everytime .

A water pik did not work for me. My current stone is too embedded to come out with a water pik. If the stone is embedded and hidden, a water pik might not be the best solution. Also consider that they are not cheap.

Hi, I use a cotton wool bud (used for ears). Push gently on it and it will pop out. Makes me gag though so takes me a few attempts!

Janet commented on 30 Dec 2007, 22:34:28
I've found that gargling with hydrogen peroxide tends to loosen them.
I will have to try what's been suggested here, as well!

I used a water pic as well. In order not to irritate your throat I would put it on the mildest setting. To really get them you have to put the end of the pic at the openings in the back of your throat. It really does a great job at rinsing them out.

guest commented on 26 Jan 2008, 11:54:38
i have also used a needle. bend the very end of the tip and you can hook them out. be careful not to stab yourself.

i have an easier method to get rid of tonsil stones

bgm commented on 31 Jan 2008, 08:37:33
brush teeth with baking soda, floss, rinse. rinse mouth with apple cider vinigar ( 2 cups fresh boiled water and 1/4 cup apple cider vinigar. when cool store in jar with lid.) morning and night. the apple cider vinigar seems to draw the bacteria out. for me it took 2 weeks to clear completely up , but l had a very bad case of it. it's been a blessing!!! also be sure to rinse mouth out with water 2 times after you rinse with the apple cider solution so it doesn't harm tooth enamel.

bgm commented on 31 Jan 2008, 09:27:33
i forgot to tell you to rinse with the apple cider solution for 1 full minute then rinse.

I just got my current nuisance out with the round side of a bobby pin, weird as that sounds - I found that info on Wikipedia. And it worked, much to my relief b/c it was starting to hurt. I had tried a straw (made me bleed), and my finger/a toothbrush both made me gag. Gargling with anything didn't help either.
Hopefully it works for you too.

guest commented on 17 Feb 2008, 10:06:49
i use a pair of tweezers it works better than a cotton bud.

guest commented on 20 Feb 2008, 14:26:27
I use a regular spray bottle and it is cheaper than a water pic.

I first noticed I had tonsil stones about 15 years ago (I'm 39). For many years I used a thin chopstick to poke them out from the crypts and an ear-bud to then pick the dislodged ones up and remove them from my throat. Looking back I don't think this was the best idea since I frequently made my throat and jaw sore. Now I try a more proactive approach:
1) Gargle 2x daily with warm salt water or diluted hydrogen peroxide, brush back of tongue religiously.
2) If I notice a stone, I try to gently dislodge and remove it using a monojet type syringe containing the same solution gargled above. Remember, GENTLY does it. It's taken me a few times to realize that tonsil tissue is pretty tender. It may not hurt when you are doing it, but it will hurt in the morning.
3) If the stone is stubborn and won't come out I will use a disposable/sterilized curve-tipped "ear-type" curette to gently ease it out (remember to wash your hands too). It's important to use a bright light so that you can see what you are doing. Also be patient. If it's stubborn keep on gargling and it will eventually give up it's grip on your tonsil. Usually it's a large one with several other small ones behing it which will come out using #2 technique above. I gargle afterwards as well.
They are really nasty, but with a little careful care they can be managed.

In a webmd forum, I read about using a plastic drinking straw to scoop them out. When they are embedded, this remedy works better than q-tips and is much less expensive than a water pic. Be careful using this technique, however, as it can irritate your tonsils if done improperly. I found it helpful to cut one end of the straw into a rounded off scoop.

guest commented on 26 Feb 2008, 15:18:19
does mouth wash help them go away?

guest commented on 07 Mar 2008, 11:17:21
I use a paper clip straightened out most of the way but leaving a small round hook/loop at the end. I can get the loop round the tonsil stone and remove it easily.

guest commented on 11 Mar 2008, 11:08:12
I've had tonsil stones before. When I would get them there was the stone and then of course kind of a space next to it in the hole. I would get a tooth pick and put it between the space and sort of "roll" the stone out, comes out every time and by the next day the hole is gone. I know it's not the safest of methods to use a tooth pick because there's a chance you can drop it and down it goes in your throat and not to mention if you poke even the slightest bit hard it will tear the tissue (probably literally tissue thin) and cause you to bleed, not a lot, but it will be annoying.

I am certain that smoking pot caused Tonsil stones for me. I used to be a heavy smoker and had these weird tonsil stones for a number of years. My doctor also said it might be food, and not to worry, but they persisted. I stopped smoking pot and after a couple of years I said to myself wow Ï haven't had one of those little white balls in a long time." But the other night I had 2 joints and one appeared and dislodged that same night and I was intrigued. Until looking atthis site today I still had no idea what they were or how to get rid of them. I 'haven't smoke pot again since the weekend and there is no sign that they are coming back. I link the two and would be interested to know if anyone else does aswell.

guest commented on 14 Mar 2008, 21:02:50
my tongue popped it out.

guest commented on 19 Mar 2008, 14:48:43
I first had them at 13. Fortuanately, i have them on one side only. the best way i found was this. Use a earcurette/bud (those things us use to get earwax out, looks like a metal stick with a curved shallow spoon at top, they come with most manicure sets) Get a small but powerful flashlight, i suggest LED or other, shine onto the tonsil with your non dominant hand, and pick out the stones. you may need to push the tonsil crypt edges aside to dislodge stones. do this until your pretty positive you've gotten rid of them. theni fyou have on other side, do the same. Afterwords, don't eat for another hour. Repeat for the next day and the next. Do this process whenever you get the feeling you have them. Sometimes, i don't get them for months at a time. Keep in mind to brush well, use a tongue scraper, mouthwash and NEVER EAT A HALF HOUR PRIOR TO GOING TO BED. this literally beckons tonsil stones to come to your throat.

This is the funniest forum...I never knew what the heck this plaque in my tonsils was from. Once in a while, I'll sneeze & one comes flying out. HOW DISGUSTING! I asked my doc. years ago, he had no idea! (flunkie!) I'm so happy to knpw I'm not the only person in the world with this!

guest commented on 21 Mar 2008, 21:40:07
i think drinking too much alcohol doesn't help with tonsil stones, i always get them after a big weekend, toothpicks help to dislodge them but my stones go too far back in little passages next to my tonsils so i use a wooden skewer to poke them out, makes me bleed, but only a little bit, i dont think a little scratch will do too much damage.

guest commented on 22 Mar 2008, 09:02:17
i never noticed them before i started smoking pot but i haven't smoked any for a few months now and i've had 2 appear in the last few days so it oviously has no link to that.

guest commented on 22 Mar 2008, 19:04:54
I have a lot fewer of these guys when I don't smoke the ganja. I know smoking must encourage them, but I've had them since before I ever smoked. I think having allergies also encourages them, but I'm not sure. They got a lot better when I found out I shouldn't be eating soy and stopped that. I have seasonal allergies as well. Do a lot of you have allergies also?

Steve commented on 23 Mar 2008, 22:16:50
What seems to work well for me is a good sneeze or two, and I try to induce the sneeze through various means.

I have suffered since I was 12. My friends used to call them "creatures". It was an awful experience. My mother is 66 and hers are huge. Anyway, I am planning on having laser surgery instead of removing my tonsils. For now I will try the water pic and apple cider vinegar. You all have no idea what this has done for me. I think a couple of boyfriends left becuase of my mouth odor. Devastating.

guest commented on 27 Mar 2008, 05:07:36
I discovered my first tonsil stone when i was in my early 20's. I was laughing and it appeared in my mouth. It was the size of a small pearl. I thought it was just plaque build up and didn't think about it anymore. I went to my dentist to have my teeth cleaned. He looked in my mouth and told me that my tonsils were huge. I went home and looked at my tonsils. They were filled with tonsil stones. I took a Q-TIP and pressed them and the stones oosed out. I gargled with hydrogen peroxide and it helped. Over a period of time the stones kept coming back. At age 32, I finally decided to have my tonsils removed. I still have an odor coming from the back of my throat. I floss, brush my teeth with toothpaste and baking soda, brush my tongue and after that I rinse and gargle with hydrogen peroxide, then rinse and gargle with listerine. I still have a bad taste and odor in the back of my throat. I'm going to the doctor. I'm glad to see that there is a name for these white stinky balls and that I'm not alone.

I have suffered from tonsil stones since childhood, but only recently (in the last 3 years) learned what they were and how to remove them. I have noticed that I don't get tonsil stones while I'm pregnant. I wonder if there is a hormonal aspect to why this is. It's one of the positives about being pregnant - not having to taste that nasty taste in your mouth!

I've never smoked pot or cigarettes. I'm 25 and I can remember having them for the longest time. So I know mine aren't related to smoking.

i think its just smoking overall that can cause it because of the debris that can get lodged in that hole
also, anybody notice how awful they smell?
and i also use a toothpick just to get them outta there when i see them

Jaz commented on 10 Apr 2008, 18:36:29
I tried using a cotton swab but that just made me gag. I eventually decided to use a toothpick, which did the trick. On my first few tries I was only able to break off small pieces, but eventually I was able to dislodge the entire stone. My throat is quite soar and raw now though, from all the picking, but I am sure that will go away.

I am 16 and have been getting these tonsil stones for a while now. I have only just realised what they are! Is it possible to get rid of them permanently or do you have to do something everyday? Also are they particularly dangerous?

guest commented on 14 Apr 2008, 15:06:59
Though I am sorry that all of you have these, I feel better knowing that I am not the only one. I have found that Q tips work for me.

Most of my tonsil stones i pulled out smelled liked crap? Why is that?

guest commented on 23 Apr 2008, 22:35:48
Melanie..... smoking pot causes peoples allergies to act up, often resulting in post nasal drip. The mucus collects in the back of your throat and bacteria feeds on the proteins in it. The tonsil stones can not possible form over night from smoking two joints!!! They were there all along. Try using a sinus irrgator with the 'tonsil attachment' or a water pick to direct a jet of water into your tonsils. You will no doubt flush a whole mess of them out the first couple times.

guest commented on 26 Apr 2008, 01:06:43
I just recently learned what these horrible things are. I am so glad that I am not alone. I have found that a long cotton swab works for me. They sure do stink!!! I wish everyone well in their fight against their stones.

Hi i am also a sufferer i heard Dr katz remedy but none of my stores or chemists selll them, would anyone know anythin similar to aktivoxigen tablets i can get (in the UK)??? thanx

guest commented on 28 Apr 2008, 01:17:33
I wish I could try most of these remedies; I think the cotton swab or bobby pin would work best for me. I've had them on/off for years, but I've only been aware of what they were for a couple of years. Around this time two years ago, I had them all the time. They put me through hell. They would break off in huge pieces and give me stomachaches out of this world! It was like, as soon as I got rid of one, another was already forming and I'd have to wait for days and they began to build. Turns out, I had some skin growing in the middle of the hole which split that one hole into two smaller ones, and it was causing the stones to become lodged. Eventually, I had three stones in that hole, so it stretched it out, which was painful on a whole other level! The stones broke through the skin and the skin fell off. THAT was painful. After that, the stones came out with no problem because nothing was holding them back. I forgot I even had them after awhile. However, for some reason now they're back. I've gotten rid of 3 alone this week! I know when they're coming on because I get that nasty taste in the back of my throat and I can feel them again. I thought they would be easy to get rid of because the skin's no longer there, but for some reason, it's becoming lodged again and giving me stomachaches when it breaks off in pieces. I'd use the remedies I've seen here, but the problem is, I have an extremely sensitive gag reflex, so I can't try any of these things. I'm not going to risk taking out my tonsils for these things, but I'm dying here!

guest commented on 28 Apr 2008, 19:19:54
I'm glad I'm not the only one wheo has tonsil stones. And finally i can put a name on it too :) Before i thought i was the only wierdo..... i found it best to use glide floss picks, because it's flat at the end, regular toothpickes would just poke 'em around , bicause they ar e sooo deep in the cripts. So that work for me :)

guest commented on 04 May 2008, 22:41:19
exercise seems to get them to come out for me.

guest commented on 05 May 2008, 22:39:49
I had them for years but since I've been using a saline sinus rinse I haven't seen one. I'm not sure why but it's definitely cleared it up completely.

guest commented on 06 May 2008, 10:52:55
I hate the site of those awful things! I have been getting them for a few months now. I have had three severe cases of tonsilitis and have been noticing them eversince. Is there anyway to get rid of them permanently without surgery?

guest commented on 06 May 2008, 19:48:12
they all smell bad, i think its some dirt that just gets caught in that little whole and grows or something.... gross isnt it?
but anyways, i try sucking like inside my mouth... idk how to explain it.... then some seem to come out and i just fish em out with some tootpicks

guest commented on 07 May 2008, 11:49:46
My stones seem to relate to all of the above (smoking, drinking and allergies) I get them here and there. But when I do get them I am embarassed and try not to talk because of the worries of bad maouth odor. Some are easier than others to take out. Sometimes a cough will do but other times I have to poke at it for a long time at least to just loosen them. I felt like I was the only one til I searched about it. I believe smoking takes a big roll in the making of these disgusting things. I hate them !

guest commented on 08 May 2008, 13:28:44
I recently discovered mine with a toothbrush and began to attempt to rid myself of them... my first one looked like a piece of a peanut. I had not had nuts for about 5 weeks so I knew something was not right there. Well, I will try these ideas, thanks.

I have suffered from these nasty critters [tonsil stones] for years. I just accepted that I would always have them. However, since using the tonsil stone remedy I learned about on tonsilstones.net, I have not experienced even one tonsil stone.
