Small plaque balls in tonsils

Author: Rebekah Leinin

I find and feel small and large yellowish white like balls of plaque lodged in my tonsils every day. i have tried gargling, brushing my teeth 24/7 and everything else, I have found that if you tape 2 tooth pics together to make one long one, you just push on the ball of plaque and it squeezes out the other side. My tonsils also hurt regularly. I have looked everywhere to find out what it is and still no answer.

I had these for years and they got worse as I got to my late teens. In the end, I had throat infections almost every month and had my tonsils out at 19. Its the best thing I ever did but the recovery was pretty painful. Worth it though - I know other people that get them too.

I seem to get these at random times throughout the year in month-long spurts, plus or minus. I have found that my breath gets worse than usual during these spurts - which is understandable since they stink and they're right there in the middle of your windpipe. I found elsewhere that their scientific name is "tonsilolith", in case you want a more complete web search. I have no clue how to prevent them or treat them. They just come and go. Any hints can be emailed to thecandybar@aol.com. Have a great day!

That's tonsilloliths with 2 L's, by the way.

Instead of 2 toothpicks taped together, try using a stir stick from Starbucks. They are long enough and work great!

I have used a blackhead/pimple remover tool found in the cosmetic section. I believe they are by the tweezers and toenail clippers in wal mart. I use the "blackhead" side because it is smooth and rounded. I also use tongue depressers to hold my tongue done while doing this. I have become actually pretty "talented" at removing these so I can hold a flash light in one hand... keep my tongue study... and use the blackhead remover to get them out.

Normally, any food or fluid we consume has to be "sampled" by the tonsil. Over time, bits of the stuff we consume pile up inside the crevices of the tonsils but the lining of the crevice must automatically separate and fall out with the debris build up of food and descend into the food pipe and then the stomach.
When this does not happen, the stuff just keeps building up anyway. It is not harmful and normally only a matter of time before it will fall out by itself.
In case of infection, pain, odor/smell or any other complication, it's a good idea to visit an ENT specialist who will either carefully take the stuff out, or recommend and perform a minor surgery to remove the tonsils.
Usually though, gargling with warm water with/without salt is recommended.
Please do not try toothpicks/cosmetic products/Starbucks stir sticks. You almost certainly develop an infection or hurt yourself. It's really the wrong place you wanna see blood oozing out from, or find pus the next day.

I also have the same problem as all of you!!! It is a terrible thing I know! I have found that dipping a q-tip in mouth wash, sticking out your tongue out as far as you can and inserting the q-tip into the tonsil is helpful! Do it several times, then gargle with warm water... then take the end of a toothbrush and massage around the front of the tonsil area pushing all the bacteria to the opening of the tonsils where it can be seen, then repeat the process!~ and when brushing your teeth be sure to brush the hell out of your tongue!!! Someone else commented that you can use a water pik,.... I got 2 of them & the pressure of the water was so extreme it actually made my tonsils bleed! Even when it was on the lowest setting,... ???? Good luck!

WATER PIK THEM OUT!!!
I've had these for years, and I've always just "Hawked" them up when I could, but sometimes there are some stubborn ones that just won't come out either because they are to large and lodged in tight, or I can feel them but can't see them. I've tried all sorts of removal remedies, but up until today I never tried my Water PIK, but I did and washed the "Plaque Nuggets" right out of there. I used a solution of warm water and mouth wash together, made sure my moth was pointed toward the sink, and had my water pik on medium spray. It even got rid of my sore throat, the one you get right before you get a full blown cold.
Well good luck to you, and let me know how it worked out.

I get these too and my dentist said that it is a build up of plaque that forms in the crypts (holes) of the tonsils. I use the curved end of a hair clip to tease them out after I have depressed the tonsil with a flat thing (such as an ice-lolly stick or emery board). Sometimes the amount that comes out makes me wretch, it's very disgusting. I wish someone could say what makes it worse (sugary/milky foods for example) so that I could avoid it. Anyway it seems to come and go and I usually start getting an uncomfortable throat when I realise i need to getting my 'tools' out.

tonsillolith, that's the medical term for what you guys are describing. Yes it is accompanied by bad breath, and hacking does not work. You can try scooping it out, or you can push it out from the pockets, that have formed behind your tonsils. If this does not work you can discuss with your doctor various form of removal, worst case scenario, tonsilectimy. this is not however a very serious condition, trouble swallowing, swelling of lymphnodes, and various other symptoms follow this. This can be caused by mucus secretions, intolerance to dairy, smoking without a filter, and other reasons. Just see if the plaque gets bigger, and then check in with your doctor.

I have had this problem since i was a small kid and now im 40.
Yes sometimes its worse than other times but i dont think its such a serious problem.
As long as they sit there and behave themselves, let sleeping dogs lie.

It seems advice is to remove tonsils, or manage the condition. I have these on and off but I notice they are much worse when my weight is up, and my diet poor: I find eating nuts and starchy foods - like cake, cookies, rich desserts at night especially make them worse. They reduce when I eat more high fibre fruits like oranges and apples last thing (but not just before bed) - I feel these leave the mouth much cleaner and maybe even massage the tonsils on the way down. This works when I am committed to doing it every day apart from the odd dinner out! Try it! I shall try the salt water gargle now..

I am very obsessed with my oral hygiene, so the shock I got when I saw my tonsil covered in yellow lumps, on a closer look I scraped one to see it was a little rock , now I have them every few days and its making me paranoid when I talk to people. :( Help!!

Danny hazle commented on 10 Jan 2011, 15:29:18
Lots of people get them, coffie, smoking, crap diet, and oral sex causes them, so clean your little finger real good im talking sterlise it and poke them out by pushing next to them then gargle with mouth wash and this will stop infection but not to hard or they will blead, keep fit with lots of running and they wont come back, and you dont want them back cos they smell worse than shit, the medical term is dog breath. No smokin or drinking and keep fit trust me i've had them, or have your tonsils out and do as you please but crap bulids up every where rember.

guest commented on 14 Jan 2011, 10:22:36
i have had these for a number of years. i'm able to pop them out by sticking my fingers on my tonsils and applying some pressure. mine come and go. Seems like they move around to various areas. (meaning i can get rid of them but they will start appearing else where). some times i can stick my tonque back there and feel them (i don't reccomend anyone doing this- for me it's like people being double jointed. my tongue is double jointed!! LOL)

Tonsil stones... if your tonsils are huge & sore, get your tonsils taken out. It'll solve the problem. If your tonsils are ok, and you've still got stones popping out... And your breath stinks bad, check behind the skin flaps that cover your tonsils, these flaps hide pockets in front of the tonsil that collect tonsil stones and you can't feel them or see them. You can pry back the skin flap with a Qtip and you'll see white stones. Or you can buy an Oral Irrigator and flush the stones out with water. I use a combo of methods: Smart Mouth Mouthwash, Biotene Mouthwash, tongue scraping, peroxide mouth rinse, salt water, and I flush my tonsils with the irrigator once a week to blast away any food debris or bacteria.
If the stones are lodged inside your actual tonsils... this is harder to remove them unless they work their way to a crypt opening. Thankfully my tonsils are small and have tiny crypts, but I still get stones once in a while. Once I flushed behind the skin flaps it solved most of the bad taste & breath I was experiencing.

Ive found that doing a bunch of cocaine seems to get rid of these so called "plaque balls"

I am a dental hygienist and have the same problem with my tonsils. I notice that these tonsilloliths occur more when I am drficient in my water etc, consumption (eight 8oz. of liquid daily). I would also recommend getting a tongue scrapper. Look at your tongue especially WAY back near the tonsils. Your tongue will most likely have quite a bacterial buildup present. Scrap your tongue each time you brush your teeth. A metal scrapper by "Dr.Tung" or a thin metal spoon work very well. Good luck :)

Oral Breeze Quick Breeze: Awesome oral irrigator... Blast the tonsils area, flush out behind your tonsil skin flaps while holding a flashlight & sticking your tongue out. I flush out TINY stones weekly smaller than a pin head... They are always forming. The key is to keep your mouth/tongue clean always, use peroxide to gargle, baking soda on your toothbrush & scrub tongue, and you MUST flush the tonsils with an oral
irrigator at least twice a week to remove trapped food debris & bacteria. Avoid dairy & eating right before bed. Also brush your teeth before bed helps too. I had lots of stones, now... My mouth/breath is much much better and my tongue stays pink, not white. Also chewing sugar free gum keeps your mouth moist throughout the day and keeps your breath fresh. Using Smart Mouth Mouthwash is a huge help.

I have suffered from these nasty critters [tonsil stones] for years. I just accepted that I would always have them. However, since using the tonsil stone remedy I learned about on tonsilstones.net, I have not experienced even one tonsil stone.
