Tonsil stones can be very annoying. If you have found your way to this site
then you may already know what having tonsil stones is like. In either case,
it's safe to say you do not want to get them. I have not yet met anyone who was
excited about getting tonsil stones. The purpose of this article is to help
those of you who are still trying to figure out if that nasty white ball in your
throat is in fact a tonsil stone.
In this diagram, you'll notice the locations of the tongue, adenoids, tonsils
etc. These items have been labeled for reference. If the white ball you are
experiencing is located in the area of the tonsils, then it's most likely a
tonsil stone.
These photos give you an idea of what tonsil stones look like after being
removed.
I too have suffered from tonsil stones. It was some time before I
located a remedy that worked for me. You may need to try different things
before successfully ridding yourself of these annoying things. I went for
several years before discovering Dr. Katz' tonsil
stone remedy.
Be sure to see the other articles on this site
for information on removing tonsil stones and prevention of tonsil stones.
Laurie commented on 17 Feb 2009, 13:42:44 I went to an ear, nose and throat doctor when I first noticed I had tonsil stones. I have always had problems with my tonsils, so this was the last straw. As soon as I told him I had tonsil stones, he said the only way to get rid of them for good was to remove the tonsils altogether. So I went through with the procedure, and I am glad that I did. No more worries about stupid tonsils stones, or sore throats again!
guest commented on 17 Feb 2009, 19:40:54 I got began to get these as an early teen. Used to pick them out with large paperclip I bent into an S. Worked until over time tonsils got worse. Bigger, stinkier, looked shredded. Got tonsils out at age 16. Wow, can a uvula get giant with the swelling! Glad I did it. 1-2 days of pain worth it. HOWEVER, now I'm 38, and it feels like I have the stones again. I have no tonsils, but I feel them whenever I am fighting infection. Perhaps this stuff isn't strictly tonsil bound? Or do I suffer from phantom tonsilitis?
guest commented on 19 Feb 2009, 11:48:20 How do you get this gross crap out of your tonsills?
guest commented on 23 Feb 2009, 18:46:36 I have never experienced anything so gross in my life. I hate them. I am very healthy and eat healthy and yet every second day I literally squeeze these balls out of each tonsil. Its just gross. I am embarassed to death by it and desperate to find a cure.
guest commented on 25 Feb 2009, 13:52:51 i have sufferd with these since i was in school but would only ever notice them occasionally untill just recently they have been coming a lot more regulary! iv never told anyone about them and even named them breath lumps! because they smelt so bad! i thought im going to have to do something about it as customers will think im unhiegenic and as a beauty therapist it was really effecting me.. probably more mentally. Now iv come accross this site im relieved to see that im not the only one and that they are actually called tonsil stones! thankyou for everyones input it has been the best news ever!
guest commented on 25 Feb 2009, 19:14:34 When I was younger the doctor told my mom to have my tonsils removed, of coarse she didn't. I so wish that she had because I've suffered all the effects of keeping them. These tonsil stones are the worst! I brush, floss and gargle more than anyone I know and still those stinky things pop up at the wrong time. I've made an appointment with a ENT doctor today. I'm sick and tired of them, the sore throat and everything else. Although I'm really afraid he may say take them out it will be worth it. This is embarrassing but I guess it's better late. Is there anyone out there that will say that the operation wasn't that bad.
JULES commented on 26 Feb 2009, 08:04:17 THANX SO MUCH FOR THIS INFORMATIVE WEBSITE AND PICS ALSO IT WAS QUITE A RELIEF TO KNOW MY HEALTH WAS NOT AT RISK AND I AM ONE IN THOUSANDS THAT DEAL WITH THIS ORAL DILEMMA THAT CAN BE CORRECTED WITH EXTRA BRUSHING AND LOTS OF LISTERINE! LOL!
guest commented on 26 Feb 2009, 13:23:36 I first noticed these evil little things about 5 years ago. They usually pop out naturally right after brushing my teeth. They only pop out a few times a year. I just coughed up a big one the other day and little itsy bitsy ones have also been coming out so I've been doing some research and have to agree with the dairy thing. The one thing I've noticed that makes them worse is when I eat lots of Ben & Jerrys. Bummer because I like ice cream. I stopped all dairy yesterday except butter. I normally drink a lot of milk so hopefully this works. I can see two tiny white dots on my left tonsil. I've never been able to see them except once when I was 19 and got reeeeallly sick and had white dots ALL over my tonsils.
guest- concerned mom commented on 27 Feb 2009, 21:27:56 I had been noticing that my 7 year old daughter seemed to have extremely bad breath even after brushing her teeth. Then one day when I was looking at her teeth to make sure that she had brushed good, I noticed something white on her tonsils. After researching, I realized that she also has these tonsil stones. I purchased a water pick, and it works very well to remove these. It seems to also be more gentle than some of the other methods to remove these horrible stones. I am just glad so much information was available on the Internet about them because her regular doctor and dentist had not been able to tell me anything about it--in fact, they had never any mentioned it to me.
guest commented on 02 Mar 2009, 19:38:12 I have been getting them for years. I never knew what they were and didnt really think nothing of it because it never hurts or smell. I didnt have any simpthoms at all so I just kinda brushed it off.
DeeDee commented on 04 Mar 2009, 01:03:47 Oh my God!!! I've been getting these things since I was little. My tonsils are a bit bigger than normal and I have gotten strep throat and tonsilitis several times. I heard that strep and tonsilitis cause bad breath and tonsil decay, so I just assumed that I was abnormal and I was coughing (gagging, really) up dead pieces of my tonsils or something.
I never told ANYONE about these nasty little things, but I haven't been able to get rid of my bad breath. I'm just comforted to know that I'm not the only person who has this problem- and that people have been able to get rid of them!! I can't wait to have nice-smelling breath!! :D
Anyone who has another suggestion for a remedy should send me an email: Clownkiller_vinluca@hotmail.com
Thanks! and Good Luck to all!!
Arianna commented on 16 Mar 2009, 06:58:24 WOW! I've had these things since I was eight and now at eighteen, I finally know what they are. I thought that I was the only person who experienced this! I never told my doctors or my dentists or even my mother because I thought that they would think that I was a freak or something. I feel silly now knowing that so many people have tonsil stones. I'm so glad to know now that my affliction has a name! I feel like starting an awareness group; looking at your comments makes me think that there are a lot more people out there that have this and think that they are alone.
guest commented on 19 Mar 2009, 22:37:48 I just found out that I suffer from these.
However, I dont have halitosis at all.
Just white/yellowish little rocklike things.
Anyone else in the same boat?
Perhaps Im lucky.
guest commented on 21 Mar 2009, 19:34:13 I have suffered from this problem since I was a youngster, and had tonsillitis on a regular basis. I always know when they are getting bad because my throat begins to itch. I am going to start the gargle process again, with salt water or if need be something like the tonsil stone remedy. I thought I was the only person to get them, and feel disgusting. I chew a lot of gum, and brush my teeth a lot. Thank you for this website, it is helping me to feel more "normal".
guest commented on 22 Mar 2009, 11:22:02 I STOP DRINKING SUGAR-DRINKS LIKE FULL FAT COKE AND MINE TOTALLY WENT AWAY. IF I HAVE SOMETHING WHICH ISNT A DIET DRINK, GUESS WHAT, THEY COME BACK. CUT BACK ON THE FIZZY DRINKS AND SUGAR BASED DRINKS!!
guest commented on 23 Mar 2009, 11:38:03 i finally popped mine out it was in there for 3 weeks! yuk it was bigger than a pea and was driving me nuts, for 3 weeks now. i feel awesome now i have a very bad gag reflex alls i gotta do is get something towards the back of my toungue and i gag forever lol i finally had the gumption to try it again after hours of research and hearing others had done it succesfully. i am very pleased now. i used a flashlight and a pair of hemostats the first few times i tried grasping it and it was very slippery and just smashed the part i touched (and all this while gagging) finally i just used the tip to press gently down and quickly hacked it up(after quickly removing hemostats) my last 3 weeks have been terrible, but now, what a beautiful day thx all
guest commented on 26 Mar 2009, 17:55:34 I just got this yesterday. I was drinking something when I noticed a wierd feeling as i swallowed. i looked in the mirror and noticed a white pimple like bump. i cannot get it out.
Nicole-Australia commented on 27 Mar 2009, 22:50:50 I've been having these white/yellow smelly things all my life. It's gotten really bad and I had to do some research on it only to find out what they are. I've still not got any info on how to get rid of them... Anyone with any suggestions on what i should or shouldn't be eating or drinking pls post it here. Or if there's something i should be gargling. Listerine and brushing twice a day doesn't work!!! :(

tjtoohott commented on 28 Mar 2009, 12:30:36 Are tonsil stones hard?
guest commented on 06 Apr 2009, 09:56:01 Tonsil stones happen to us because, as my doctor said, I have large tonsils with deep cavities. Food and bacteria get stuck in them and essentially the "tonsil stone" is like a hardened piece of puss. When your body tries to fight off infection it produces these tonsil stones, when you start picking at them you can give yourself a sore throat because the body wasn't allowed to do it's job. The only 100% cure is to have your tonsils removed. Some flushing, gargling may help food from becoming stuck, but if you have porous tonsils and don't have them removes, they will produce stones.
guest commented on 06 Apr 2009, 20:13:46 This is disgusting. I've had this problem for quite sometime and i'm 17!!! How embarrasing.. Mine aren't every once in a while.. Yesterday i removed 3.. today I removed 4! Its nice to know i'm not the only one! Any ways to get rid of them for good? i'm desperate. I'm about to make a trip to the ENT!
guest commented on 07 Apr 2009, 03:37:11 Hi i have had these for years mine can get as big as 1cm in diameter or more! I find "clenching" the back of my throught helps to try and push them out of the tonsils and then just spit them out! good to know am not alone!
Would suggest seeing doc tho just incase it's due to tonsilitis or something! and if it's something treatable you can get rid! for good!
Garggle everyday with mouthwash or salt water! and you should stop the severity!
guest commented on 07 Apr 2009, 13:16:32 Well I have had these for years they aren't that bad but they are irritating and SUPRE foul smelling. I've heard to gargle warm salt water helps prevent them
guest commented on 07 Apr 2009, 22:16:21 OMG! I like everyone else thought something was wrong with me.Thank you for this site!
guest commented on 08 Apr 2009, 13:08:49 I got what feels like a gi-normous one on my left side. I can usually strain my throat and get them to work their way out, but this one is being stubborn. Im so glad I discovered when these were. I just thought food collected in the back of my throat and I was some gross freak. Looks like im not the only gross freak out there.
Yvette commented on 08 Apr 2009, 19:15:19 I "Just" found out recently what these things really are, I have had these tonsil stones all my life. When I do have them, I feel like I have some thing "Stuck" at the back of my throat, so I try to either cough them up or try to sneeze them out! They do smell pretty bad, even FOUL! I am finally relieved to learn that there is an actual name for these annoying little pockets.
guest commented on 17 Apr 2009, 18:40:55 I have tonsil stones too. I know when I have one because it feels like my tonsils are cramping. My tonsils get really hard, and I take a toothpick and pop them out. Some of them are really huge and smell just horrible. I chew gum all the time because I'm worried that my breath smells bad. When I was younger, my pediatrician told my mom my tonsils would eventually shrink, but they have gotten bigger. They hang down into my throat, and I have episodes of sleep apnea. I want to get my tonsils removed, but I heard the older you get, the surgery is more difficult.
kendall commented on 17 Apr 2009, 18:43:29 I've had them since I was a child. They only time I didn't get them was when I was pregnant. I didn't get them for 9 months straight. A few weeks after my twins were born, they came back, and they smelled worse than ever.
Bobby Edwards commented on 19 Apr 2009, 20:17:19 i get these all the time. i cough them up and sometimes they come out when i sneeze. they stink like hell too. i thought it was from me performing too much oral sex
guest commented on 23 Apr 2009, 11:34:13 i started getting tonsil stones about a year ago, i'm 16, i've found that gargling warm water with honey in helps to get them to a point where you can just push them out. the honey lifts bacteria to the surface, you can also put honey on splinters to get them out but that is slightly irrelevant! hope this helps
yuck smell commented on 27 Apr 2009, 16:16:12 and they smell like S***
Mariaa x commented on 01 May 2009, 07:45:09 OMG! . I WAS WELL ANNOYED I THOUGHT I WAS DYING ,!. so i kept quiet about these nasty pieces of shitt . I cough them upp. I cant rmove them with cotton buds cause i gag, any suggestions, ? x
guest commented on 03 May 2009, 20:15:39 i also have them come out of big holes in my tonsil
guest commented on 04 May 2009, 16:10:38 I just removed a rather large one from my left tonsil yesterday. Saw the characteristic white bump and used my toothbrush to push at the white bump. To my surprise a long ribbon of white crap came out and managed to ball itself into a "stone." Feel a lot better although my throat is somewhat sore. Have battled these for years and until now could not figure out what was wrong with me. Thank goodness for this forum.
Stan commented on 06 May 2009, 07:25:29 Since these things are made of bacteria it would be only logical to gargle with vinegar. I just started doing it with 5% apple cider vinegar. Also, sugar is food for bacteria. Try to limit the intake.
I am surprised so many people have this problem. My dentist said tonsil stones do not exist....
guest commented on 07 May 2009, 10:03:54 I have been getting these since I was about 13 (now im 25). What I think works best is using a syringe (the one I got when I got my wisdom teeth removed) that thing finally wore out and now I use an ear cleaner one. You need one with a lot of pressure to clean out the tonsil. I fill it with water, sometimes Hydrogen proxide and shoot it at my tonsils. Then after I get them all cleaned I use Lysterine. I do this about once a week! It drives me nuts, but its seems as if I have no other choice.
Darlisa commented on 09 May 2009, 06:43:19 HI, I had a viral infection about 1.5 years ago, and lost my voice (Laryngitiis) which never away, I was then sent to an ENT specialist. He put a tube up my nose and it came down my throat. He said, my voice box was burnt, and I have acid reflux. I know that that is not my issue, because I don't have heart burn, or sour stomach, none of the symptoms you would have with that.
I started googling and researching my own diagnosis.
I have come to the conclusion that after all this time, and imagine having a hard time speaking since Sept. of 2007,
I have an infected tonsil on my left side which causes numerous side effects, which include sore throat, jaw pain, neck pain, earrache, the feeling of a wade of guaze wrapped around my tonsil, and yes tonsil stones, my swollen tonsil must be pushing on my voice box, and it has caused me to have vocalization problems. I now know I need to have them taken out, but It sounds like having them removed in adults pretty dangerous, because of the bleeding issue. Oh, and try to tell the Dr. this is my diagnosis, fix me up. OH no, they have to send you back to an ENT to look at your tonsils for a huge fee, and tell you yup you are right, you need your tonsils out, but you are 50 yrs old, and a surgery risk.
I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place, but would like to speak in a normal voice again. Anyone have any suggestions? I also noticed, I snore up a major storm during the night.
guest commented on 12 May 2009, 17:37:35 I have had tonsil stones for years.I remove my own.I use my pinky finger to kind of massage my tonsil and push them out.Don't have a long finger nail that might cut or scratch your tonsil.
guest commented on 13 May 2009, 20:04:19 I have been gargling religiously every night with Listerine Anti-Cavity (the purple one). I regularly had small stones that I manually removed with a cotton swab or my fingers, I would approximate about monthly. Since the regimented gargling, I have not had any.
jarvis commented on 18 May 2009, 17:48:29 mines continue to grow back and i just keep poping thim out and im 14 i think i need to go see my dentist
guest commented on 18 May 2009, 18:05:07 I get these but they do not stick on my tonsils. I can feel them coming up like I have to cough them up. I have never seen them stuck to my tonsils. It is nasty. I also get a strange pain (not that painful) on the left side of my neck. I have had it for awhile now and I now I really need to get it checked out. I have no inscurance now but will have it looked asap when I do!
Liz commented on 21 May 2009, 18:27:03 My daughter is 6 and has had these for about a year. At first, I noticed something white in the back of her throat, but now, I can smell them on her breath when they're not even visible. We use a plastic syringe that I was given when I had my wisdom teeth removed. I fill it with water and squirt it into the crypt. If we're successful we usually see up to ten of these stinky critters in the sink. It seems like most people are writing about one or two. Does anyone ever get this many out in one session? She has less of a hole and more of a flap. I've noticed after a good cleanse that her breath is fresh for up to a month or so- but then they return. I feel so bad for her. Not sure what is worse.... putting her through this or sending her to school with such offensive breath.
guest commented on 26 May 2009, 09:23:34 I have had these all my life. I just went to a Ears Nose and Throat doctor and he said that most people have tonsil stones. He said that it is food that gets trapped behind your tonsils when you swallow, and just sits there and putrifies and then it some how goes through the tonsils. The only way to remedy it is to get your tonsils out and he said for an adult this will be very painful.

guest commented on 29 May 2009, 05:25:35 WOW! I am soo happy I am not alone on these little effers! I have been getting these stinky little balls of poo in my tonsils since I was very young like maybe 11 or 12 yrs old. I am now 29 and I still get them only now they are worse. I have this one crypt in my left tonsil that really becomes chocked full of them at times. It's really gross and they smell like well...I can't really describe the smell, all I know is that it really STINKS! I have come to deal with them though and found the perfect tool to remove them with...a bobby pin! It really works! On a more serious note though, I have made an appointment today to see my family doctor to see if she can refer me over to a ear and throat specialist and hopefully get my stinky tonsils taken out for good so that I don't have to suffer any more of these "tonsil stones" aka shit balls! lol
guest commented on 03 Jun 2009, 21:56:37 I just used long, sharp pointed tweezers. :) I'm surprised no one here said they had used those! They just pulled right out! Man, was it huge, especially for my first experience with them! The Dr said that I probably had them before, down deeper in my tonsils that I can't see.
Melanie commented on 08 Jun 2009, 00:39:28 omg! ok it seem i just randomly started getting these. when i 1st saw one i was like WTF!!!! but i was reading up online about how to get rid of them.. i prefer just pushing them out with my finger.
Tiffany!!! just push around with ur finger at the back of ur mouth to empty out the pockets
guest commented on 10 Jun 2009, 14:00:25 Hah I hate these stupid things...whenever my husband and I get them, we call them kaka balls because they stink so bad-lol!!!
I have suffered from these nasty critters [tonsil stones] for years. I just accepted that I would always have them. However, since using the tonsil stone remedy I learned about on tonsilstones.net, I have not experienced even one tonsil stone. - Mike, Missouri USA
