Pictures of Tonsil Stones

Tonsil stones can be very annoying. If you have found your way to this site then you may already know what having tonsil stones is like. In either case, it's safe to say you do not want to get them. I have not yet met anyone who was excited about getting tonsil stones. The purpose of this article is to help those of you who are still trying to figure out if that nasty white ball in your throat is in fact a tonsil stone.

In this diagram, you'll notice the locations of the tongue, adenoids, tonsils etc. These items have been labeled for reference. If the white ball you are experiencing is located in the area of the tonsils, then it's most likely a tonsil stone.

These photos give you an idea of what tonsil stones look like after being removed.

I too have suffered from tonsil stones.  It was some time before I located a remedy that worked for me.  You may need to try different things before successfully ridding yourself of these annoying things.  I went for several years before discovering Dr. Katz' tonsil stone remedy

Be sure to see the other articles on this site for information on removing tonsil stones and prevention of tonsil stones.

Thank you to California Breath Clinics, and Wikipedia for the above images.

I try to pop them out with my pinkies or a very long q-tip. I hate more than anything when I can't reach them. It's aweful when I feel them and I have to cough a bunch of them up. It's aweful

Thank goodness there are other crazy people out there (like me) who dig these MOST annoying hard little horrible
lumps out of our poor little tonsils. I haven't laughed (and cried) so hard in ages! Someone should form a support group for strange bods like us, YAY

I just went to the EMT to try and see what he could do for my tonsil stones. He basically told me that I could not get my tonsils out just because I had tonsil stones & there was nothing he could do for me. He also said not to pick my tonsils. I left very discouraged and I am still. This is just so annoying, being told "there is nothing we can do for you" - I am so upset I will have to live with this for the rest of my life. What do i do?

Stuck commented on 08 Jul 2008, 13:04:13
I had one stuck in my throat for about a week. I thought i new what it was but was not sure so i went to the docs and the told me to go see and thrt and nose doc. So i have had it for a week finally last night i was eating out and had some bread and it finally went done. It was annoying big time i had it stuck so far down my thrt that i could not get it out. i had to wait it out for a week until it left on its own. I hate those things i have had it once befroe but never this long. Dont waste your money going to the docs just try and eat something hard and it should come out if your gets stuck in your thrt too.

>>>Do ur tonsils hurt and get white stufff on them when u hav tonsil stones?
And are the tonsil stones actually hard?
My tonsils never get sore when I have one, only when I'm poking them trying to get the tonsil stone out! The stones are actually not very hard. You can mush them. They smell.

guest commented on 11 Jul 2008, 23:41:49
My 6 year old daughter has been coughing up these things all last week. A couple of her friends from school had commented on her bad breath and I had noticed it as well, but just tried to make sure she brushed her teeth and tongue twice or more a day. We were on vacation when she was coughing these things up EVERYDAY! I am so glad that I found this site. I made an appt. with her doctor to see what we can do for her....she shouldn't have to suffer with bad breath and the self-conscious issues at such an early age.

hahah...this is great. my roommate used to threaten her boyfriend with my tonsil stones. aka tonsil cheese. i used to get them quite frequently, then I got tonsilitis, took antibiotics, and haven't had them since. interesting

guest commented on 13 Jul 2008, 17:59:22
i hate my tonsils!

trickster commented on 13 Jul 2008, 18:39:48
I just noticed my first tonsil stone half an hour ago. I got it off by scraping it with toothbrush.

Deeds commented on 17 Jul 2008, 21:12:36
I just started getting these after I was on antibiotics for an abscessed tooth. THe first one I got was huge and it left my throat sore. I didn't know what it was so naturally I panicked. My mom tried to tell me it was food stuck, but I thought it was cancer or something.
So I jabbed at it with a Qtip for 5 minutes and when it broke loose, I started gagging. That was the most ridiculous feeling and taste. I threw up afterwards.
Now I get them frequently, I check every day for them and just a little bit ago dug two out from my left tonsil and about 7 from my right one. If you take a flashlight and really just look, you can sometimes see them even in the cavernous parts of your tonsils. It's a terrible feeling to have them and terrible thought KNOWING you have them. I recommend using non-alcoholic mouthwash immediately after digging these bad boys out. Don't poke at your tonsils too much, they'll bleed like mine did today.
I've become pretty obsessive over this and no one I know has heard of them.
I'm 24, btw.

ME! commented on 18 Jul 2008, 13:20:03
Okay nasty white chunks of nasties. Had them since I can remeber... 12 and up.
when I was younger somone told me it was dead white blood cells from hitting my head on accident or purpose.
Either way I tried real hard not to bump my head to see if they would go away.. up until i was 24 did i find out it is nasty bacteria bugs pooping in my tonsil which my tonsil poops into my throat.
yuk.
so I have gotten really sick even when getting these.
So it is either preventing me from dieing or they really are worthless. Because I have been so sick I wanted to die. flu and everything.
So do these white nasty turds serve a purpose? not for me.
I am getting my tonsils removed because
1
my tonsils are huge and it always feels like i have a ball in my throat or I can feel my tonsils rubbing together and it is just yukky.
2
tonsil turds, getting larger and larger, smellier, nastier, just gross. It makes me sick or want to gag every day.
3
I get a sore throat when the turds are unable to dislodge or poop in my mouth. So if it gets stuck which they do I get sick.
yuck yuck.
I call em tonsilsloths because every time i see the real name that is what i see, plus why wouldn't they be called tonsilsloths they hide in the back of your throat and SLOWLY move around and STINK!
sloths stink bad.
So yeah. I think they are really called tonsillolith ... tonsilsloth ... i think i am dyslexic a little just FYI.
So yeah also tonsils that are enlarged can cause snoring and sleep apnea. Which since they have become overly enlarged they have caused lots of problems sleeping at night. That and I snore so hard it hurts in the morning. yuk. Happened after my 2 pregnancy.
got worse.
So yeah. Tonsillectomy!

§up£rworrid commented on 20 Jul 2008, 09:45:06
ahh geez i just started getting these and thought it was from chewing gum. but no i was in the bathroom shoving the back of a toothbrush to get them out. but they freak me out i thought i had a diesease! whew. i also thought maybe an alien was laying eggs in my throat. im sooo relieved!

guest commented on 21 Jul 2008, 16:22:09
I have been getting these disgusting things every since i can remember and they have been a nuisance in my life, they are so annoying and they smell awful. Recently i have been using a water-pik and its supposed to rinse and flush the stones out. It has been working pretty good for me so far.

P.Kaye 43 commented on 22 Jul 2008, 17:22:16
I had these too, and at age 40 I had my tonsils REMOVED! PROBLEM SOLVED! No more bad breath! no more cavities in my teeth for the last 3 years because I no longer use breath mints to hide that awful smell. Just sorry I didn't do this sooner. Advice... Do yourself and all around you a big favor... Have those tonsils REMOVED ASAP... No matter how old you are... enuf said?

i started to have tonsil stones like a year ago. they are always stuck at my throat, i try not to let anyone see it when i dig out with my finger. my dad actually thought i was having some pre-cancer symptoms

guest commented on 30 Jul 2008, 20:13:26
I am 23 and have had tonsil stones for a little over a year now. I had no idea what was going on in the back of my throat or tonsils. I was so disgusted the first time I coughed one of them up. The smell horrified me. I am so relieved to find some information on the web and find other people with the same problem. I was too embarrassed to go to the doctor or tell any of my friends about them. So I want to thank everyone for sharing this somewhat common but terribly embarrassing phenomenon.

My solution commented on 31 Jul 2008, 17:06:20
I developed these at the same time that I developed a gluten sensitivity. If I eat a lot of bread or pasta I get these - avoid it and no tonsil stones. I learned to flush my nose with saline or warm water in the shower then make a tight "clucky" noise in my throat to pop them out. It works.

guest commented on 07 Aug 2008, 15:33:39
only way to deal with these things is to get yourself a water pik. if the nozzle is too small ( too much pressure(make you bleed) file it down so the opening is bigger at the tip make sure no sharp edges. shove the tip in your tonsil crypts and blast away. I flushed out one the size of a pea today and about 4 little offspring. gaggg yukk i cant believe that crap was in my body yuck!! and dont give up with the waterpik too soon... experiment with different angle or using the curved end to widen the opening allowing the water pressure to flush them out. you will gross out! ha ha.

guest commented on 11 Aug 2008, 21:18:41
I've used a water pik on the lowest setting and it cleans the tonsil out. I can tell when they are starting to build-up and just use a q-tip to push on the tonsil to get them out. Fortunately, one tonsil only develops them because the crevices are so much bigger than the other.

guest commented on 13 Aug 2008, 14:24:03
ew, i hate these things & so glad theres some advice!
scooping them out? ahhhhh. ive just coughed them up but cant actually see them.

janet commented on 16 Aug 2008, 05:48:11
I have had my removed 24 years ago and I STiLL get these...what do I do?

ex-tonsilstoner commented on 16 Aug 2008, 08:23:13
STOP DRINKING SO MUCH MILK...and watch your diet. When I did---they went away.
1.) Clean with a q-tip soaked in Listerine
2.) Clean with a q-tip soaked in peroxide
3.) Cut down on your MILK
I got them every few days from 12-15----I haven't gotten one since and I am now in my late twenties.
I haven't dranked milk regularly since 19--Tend to do SoyMilk and occasional whole milk with cerel only a few times a year.
**They may have something to do with allergies as well**
I DID go to an Ear, Nose & Throat doctor who mentioned food was getting caught/stuck there and creating bacteria. Those balls are bacteria---EW!
Anyways, na, na, na ,na na---I dont have em anymore!
(funny, i still check every month though..HAHAHA)

B commented on 18 Aug 2008, 02:01:49
too funny. I have had these since i was a kid. i don't see mine and they are very small, and I can go for up to a month or two and then sometime a bunch in a couple days. I cannot feel them as I have always had big tonsils and sometimes I cough and they arrive.
Gargling with Listerine before brushing helps. I read somewhere that having your tonsils removed is a good idea, however I just read a comment above from someone who didn't develop them UNTIL they had them removed...thoughts?

guest commented on 18 Aug 2008, 18:16:09
Thank you so much all of you for the information and the belly laughs!!! So glad to know that I am not alone. Had these sickening things for years and know what you all are going through. I am 43 years old, big on hygiene and after asking my dentist, talking to others, and searching through books to find out what was wrong, I finally find out tonight that they are known as tonsil stones. What a relief to know I am not seriously ill!

shanice commented on 18 Aug 2008, 21:53:01
hey ppl omfg when i was using mouthwash i would gargle and cough them up about 2 at a time ! am relived 2 know im not the only person who has this problem. but oh boy they smell so flipping bad i feel like vomiting!

guest commented on 19 Aug 2008, 16:45:22
The stones aren't hard. It actually gives me a weird satisfaction when I hack them up! haha. Anyway, I've gotten them FOREVER, I think because I suffer from horrendous allergies! I just flex my throat, and sort of do a vibrating growl down in my throat to pop them out... then spit 'em out, wash 'em down the drain, and brush my teeth!!!!

anniaa commented on 22 Aug 2008, 21:21:43
i have this tonsil stones once in a while and it really make me frantic and have nervous attacks, i thought this was tumor getting out of my mouth,, do somebody here havfe tried that dr.kats remedy?? or a home remedy for this tonsil stones?? i have no money to open this site so if u can just tell me what to buy or what to do... thanks angelesanna@yahoo.com

Alex commented on 24 Aug 2008, 06:16:07
I've been getting these weird things for a couple months now. Has anyone collected them to see what happens? I put a few in a bag.. after a day or two they start looking brown or like a scab. I think that might mean that they are dead cells or something. Has anyone else done this also?

BABABOOEY commented on 27 Aug 2008, 23:32:41
OK...FOLKS I GOT THE LITTLE CRITTERS IN MY MOUTH TOO. ONCE A WEEK I STAND IN FRONT OF A MIRROR WITH A FLASHLIGHT AND POP THE SUCKERS OUT WITH A DENTIST'S PICK! YUP...I DIG IN THERE WHERE THESE SUCKERS BUILD UP OVER TIME.
GOOD LUCK!

guest commented on 28 Aug 2008, 08:59:48
wow i coughed one up months ago and thought it was just some food that got stuck back there. today another one came up (i have had a bad cough) i looked it up on the net and found this place.
i honestly wouldn't have known it was there until it popped out. my god they stink though when you squash them, they are not hard, a bit like squashing a cooked pea.

Alexa commented on 29 Aug 2008, 23:21:14
Wow its weird that this site exists I thought I was just a weirdo. I hate tonsil stone my throats really sensitive because of allergies so this is interesting and I'm glad it hear.

Deanne commented on 31 Aug 2008, 18:02:23
The little Nerds! I get them but not that often. Today I caught the biggest one I've ever had and couldnt take it anymore and started to do some research which is how I came up with this site. I tried to explain it to my bf and he thinks that I am crazy as he has never heard anyone speak of this. I told him just because of that I hope one pops up when he's here so that I will trick him into smelling it, evil I know, lol . And yes to your question Alex, I put it to the side to see what it would look like later or what would happen to it and it shribbled up into a little brown speck, what the heck! It still stinks though! uuhhhgggg

guest commented on 01 Sep 2008, 22:03:24
Omg this is too funny..Thank the lord I am not the only one out there dealing with this, I tried explaining it to my fiance and asked him if he ever coughed one up..he was like eww.. haha poor guy bless his heart for sticking around...anyhow I been reading all night finally figured out where all that stuff was coming from ... after gagging and partially throwing up i got them out.. cant believe how much was in there, at least I can tell the doctor what it is I am suffering from!!

lujan commented on 03 Sep 2008, 01:45:15
I spoke with my dentist and he told me that this little white balls that form on my tonsils come from drinking or eating citrusy foods are baverages. For me i love cranberry juice and oranges juice. And as soon as I eat or drink them I can almost feel my tonsil forming the white ball in my mouth. And sure enough, one to two days later there it is. I have tired all kinds of things to get them out, but what has worked for me (I'm too afraid to do it again though). I was poking at one of these things and I hit my tonsil and it started to bleed. Minute or two later all the stinky balls came out. Nothing like blood.

StinkMouth commented on 03 Sep 2008, 10:43:24
I don't think it is a good idead to harvest them. But they stink like nobody's business!

PeRZon commented on 04 Sep 2008, 12:24:32
I've had these this prob since i was 16, now I am 21 and about half a year ago i noticed in the back of my throat i had a giant nickel sized tonsil stone... Giant! it smells absolutely horrible. Even if i don't talk to people they can smell my breath through my nose.. these things have made my life horrible a sad lonely depression. I have dropped out of school because of it and lost jobs. I went to a doctor and he acted like he could not see it even with his flash light and tools.... and he would not write me a paper for a ENT. I also dont have health insurance for a ENT i cant afford it. I have tried picking my giant tonsil stone out with many tools... but none have worked. I don't know how any of you live your life with this curse we all share, because i can barley leave my house or speak to people closest to me they make me feel so uncomfortable.

ANYONE have any advice to what is working for them?!? Please help

guest commented on 11 Sep 2008, 20:33:33
I have had these "stones" as long as I can remember, am I the only one that dosen't mind them? I clear my throat and they come out. -simple- no pain or anything.

Kat commented on 12 Sep 2008, 00:43:33
I'm 21 and I just recently found out I had these after seeing a specialist. They make me feel really crappy! He took the big one I had out of my mouth and now I have high fevers and a sticky/slimy gross taste (like a post nasal drip thing)....I'm getting my tonsils removed soon but MAN they SUCK! :(

Gemma commented on 19 Sep 2008, 12:48:59
I just harvested a whole bunch of tiny tonsil stones out of a now-cavernous gap in my right tonsil. Got a bit over-excited and made it bleed, so had to swill salt water and gargle with antiseptic mouthwash.
Feel LOADS better though. I could smell and taste them inside my mouth all the time. Yuk.

LLB commented on 22 Sep 2008, 19:50:27
I just started a new job and I have been dealing with bad breath for years. Going to the dentist and they telling me that my teeth are perfect and everything is fine, is so misleading. Why is no one in the oral profession talking about this issues. With me being a singer, I though my bad breath was due to my singing and dry mouth. WTF. Doctor, get on this crap!

guest commented on 25 Sep 2008, 11:13:43
Hi. I don't have tonsil stones since I had my tonsils out when I was a kid.
However, if you all want to see a really cool video of tonsil stones being removed, go to youtube and watch a video called "super caseum" - you can really see a the doctor removing a ton of tonsil stones from this patient's tonsils....
and they must have smelled terrible. Enjoy!

guest commented on 28 Sep 2008, 23:28:02
i get them too especially in the morning when i wake up, so i RELEASE them then...usually by gagging it out, they'll come out easily, however stubborn ones will remain there for days! oh, i also get blood ones too, is this bad?

eww commented on 29 Sep 2008, 00:10:49

wow.I am forty-one. quite smoking five years ago. now for a good 2 years or so have had these things catch themselves in the back of my throat. I have "coughed out" HUGE ones that have woke me up in the middle of the night (thank GOD that it woke me the thought of letting one get away down my throat would be a shame-How else would i get to play with it in my hand and smush it with my finger. To bad these things aren't like farts-come on we all know we like the smell of our own farts) anyway sometimes they "Cough Out" easy. Hell today i coughed one up right in the middle of talkin' to a co-worker and caught it right under my tounge. kept it there 'til i could find a place to get it the Fuck out of my mouth. God these suck but thank you all for the Piece of mind! Thought all the same crap as everyone else, cancer, food, lung and the biggest of all-----what the fuck is this! Thanx

I am just so happy that i now know what I have been dealing with for the past year and a half. I went to the doctor so many times and he had absolutely no idea what I was dealing with. I had no idea if it was contageous and was always afraid to kiss my boyfriend. I am so happy to know that this is not something that I contracted from kissing and that there are more sufferers out there! Thank you soooo much for creating information sites like this one that allows people to finally understand what is really going on in the back of their throats!

I have suffered from these nasty critters [tonsil stones] for years. I just accepted that I would always have them. However, since using the tonsil stone remedy I learned about on tonsilstones.net, I have not experienced even one tonsil stone.
