Pictures of Tonsil Stones

Tonsil stones can be very annoying. If you have found your way to this site then you may already know what having tonsil stones is like. In either case, it's safe to say you do not want to get them. I have not yet met anyone who was excited about getting tonsil stones. The purpose of this article is to help those of you who are still trying to figure out if that nasty white ball in your throat is in fact a tonsil stone.

In this diagram, you'll notice the locations of the tongue, adenoids, tonsils etc. These items have been labeled for reference. If the white ball you are experiencing is located in the area of the tonsils, then it's most likely a tonsil stone.

These photos give you an idea of what tonsil stones look like after being removed.

I too have suffered from tonsil stones.  It was some time before I located a remedy that worked for me.  You may need to try different things before successfully ridding yourself of these annoying things.  I went for several years before discovering Dr. Katz' tonsil stone remedy

Be sure to see the other articles on this site for information on removing tonsil stones and prevention of tonsil stones.

Thank you to California Breath Clinics, and Wikipedia for the above images.

OMG! I have had these dirty bum smelly balls for many many years!! I call them "pick-a-pus". I used to obsess in the mirror with a nail file untill I was sure they were all gone! (gagging and sometimes bleeding) My friend used to think I was gross...but she ended up with them too!! Now we have our very own elite club. My Sister is also a member. LOL I can't believe there is a site with pics...lol I can't wait to show my husband..haha

Richard...sure hope you do not end up with a UTI if one of the stones enters your urethra.

I am 30 years old and I have had tonsil stones for years... since i was 16 and had a horrible bout of strep throat that caused my tonsils to become abnormally large and with deep pockets. i went weeks being sick with strep and it went untreated until i ended up in the hospital with a fever of 106! my tonsils have never been the same. but i just learn to deal with the stones... i use a stretched out hair pin to remove them. I first sanitize it and then it is the perfect size to go in get underneath the stone and force it out. I did go see an ear, nose, throat specialist and he told me it was completely safe to get them out myself. But he also told me the only way to stop them completely is to get the tonsils out... but i guess it is pretty dangerous when you are my age. I guess i will have to just keep dealing with them. Good luck to everyone!

So glad that I found this website...I had never had these things before until I was 18 AFTER I had mono. Im wondering if this has anything to do w/ it. Anywho, after recovering from mono I noticed that my tonsils remained huge, and the craters that developed when I had mono never decreased in sized. A few months after, I noticed a little "gift" was peeking out in my tonsils..LOL..every since they come very often. They mostly come in my left tonsil, but just like most of the comments above, I will get a sore throat and feel somethin irritating the back of my thoat. I will reluctatnly take a look and "Suprise"...another gift waiting to be plucked. Im 22 now, and so glad I came across Dr. Katz website. Im going to try his method and hopefully get some relief from this nuisance.....

GO TO HELL TONSIL STONES commented on 13 Apr 2008, 19:34:09
I am so glad I found this site!!! I have been to the doctor a total of 3 TIMES about the damn things and no one knew what was going on. I was even told that the taste was probably mental (wtf?) I have been misdiagnosed with Acid Reflux and given prescription for some drugs for something I don't have! Mine happen to come and go within about 5-10 days. After researching for some time now I'm happy I found the answer and that I am not alone on this. I too thought that I was suffering from some unknown disease. I even looked into things such as throat cancer or oral STDs. The stones do happen to produce a disgusting taste in my mouth but I haven't suffered from bad breathe or sore throat. They just make everything taste disgusting. I've gotten three in the last 9 months and each time it was difficult to deal with. I'm glad to know that they are harmless and easy to get rid of now. I'm not ready to go as far as remove my tonsils but at least I know how to handle this situation from now on! Thank you everyone for posting. You have made me so relieved!!!!!

My first experience with these nasty little things was quite memorable. I swollowed a big pill....aspirin or something...and it dislodged a tonsil stone....but it was still connected somehow to my tonsil...I looked up to the sky and went aaahhhhh and you could here it vibrating in my throat...my brother was so freaked out...So I drank a beer and the tonsil stone came out...and stinked up the whole room....awful.

OMG!!! This is TOO funny! I've had tonsil stones for what seems an eternity. I saw white spots on my right tonsil one day and thought they were some type of throat pimple so... I tried popping them. SUCCESS! This putrid yellowy chunks of goodness burst right out. I'm weird (and so are some of you) and decided to smell the darn things. UGH!!! They smelled like they had come out of something's @$$! Oh what horrid things!
Just as most of you thought... You were alone with some strange throat disorder and I confided in my best friend. I was SOOO relieved when she told me she had them too. We didn't have the faintest idea what these gross little chunks of nasty were called, therefore we dubbed them THROAT CHUNKS.
Sometimes I'll have a few large ones and other times if I push on my tonsils hard enough, it looks like 20 little ones. For some strange reason it's only my right tonsil that has them.
I just deal with them. I have GIANT tonsils and I'm sure I'll have to deal with these things forever. Hey... I'm bored enough to look at these as finding mouth treasure!

How ripped off do I feel. I haven't even got my tonsils and I still get these bloody things. I just cant stand them, I have to get them out. I use a mnin mag and a suitable appliance and remove them. there seemd to be an endless supply of them. I could remove four easily 3 to 5 cm wide. Discusting little bugars

Finally. I'm glad I googled "stinky throat glob" after so many years of paranoid wonderment. I work in construction, and I am quite disgruntled frequently. I hacked one of these bad boys up and placed it on a light switch a few days before the homeowners moved it. Revenge is a dish best served cold, fetid, and tonsillolithic. I'm 24 now, and seriously considering a tonsillectomy. I am quite tired of being self conscious about my breath. I can only wonder how much money I've wasted on buying packs of gum in a pathetic attempt to disguise the anal smell. Thanks for the support guys. And remember-have fun with the damn things.

guest commented on 21 Apr 2008, 16:50:30
Wow. My situation is not as bad as some of yours. I can't see them on my tonsils, but a couple of times a month I can feel one in the back of my throat in what I know now as the tonsil region (who knew??!). I know it's there because it feels like a little kernel stuck in my throat and occasionally I can taste it. I just keep swallowing and eventually it pops out on its own. Stinky! When I try to poke at the region with my finger to quicken the process, I usually just gag and give up.
I don't have the terrible breath that you all talk about, but I'm wondering . . . will it progress into that?

Chastity commented on 22 Apr 2008, 11:28:26
I'm so glad to read all these stories. A few weeks ago I started feeling a scratchy feeling in the back of my throat. I thought I had a piece of chip stuck back there or something but when I realized it wasn't going away I looked in the mirror with a flash light and saw this little white thing back there. I stuck my finger back there to see what it was and it disappeared into a little hole. I thought that was so gross and I didn't want to tell anyone. I was worried about what it was and so I got online and started looking things up and discovered that I'm not alone. I'm going to try the Aktiv Oxygen Tablets and Nasal Sinus Drops. I'll do anything to get rid of these before they get too bad.

i WONT be getting my tonsils removed just because of them lol and my mum has just confirmed that i don't have bad breath

HE HE Glad I'm not alone...I have suffered bad breath for years and knew it wasn't bad oral hygene. I have discovered those nasty little stink bombs after shining a torch in the cake hole. Yuk. After much retching and rummaging in the back of my throat...I hit on an idea. I soaked a bud in olive oil and swabbed around the tonsil. Two minutes later pressed the bud onto the soft tissue and.......woooo out pops three lumps. And as you know phew what a stink. Thought it was only on one side but a week later did the same on the other and lo and behold..another three or four critters...oh my!! Anyway now I know maybe the stinky breath might go away. Going to invest in a water jet so hopefully will blast the stink bombs for ever more.

Ever since I was a child I have been obsessive about my breath. I am so careful with my teeth, but have been told by my mother that I sometimes have bad breath. I was crushed, but my dentist just told me to brush and floss more. I also have coughed up things and felt like, oh god, is there something wrong with my lungs? I was convinced there was something wrong with my lungs. I also have been sick for about 6 years in a row and no one has been able to tell me why. I even went to visit an EMT and he said that taking my tonsils out might fix my persistent winter sickness, but it might not. I was debating if the surgery was worth it. How has no doctor or dentist been able to help me put all of this together before?? Finally today I stumbled upon this sight and I am going back to the EMT as soon as possible. Thank you for all of your information!

Like everyone else here...I am so happy to know I am not the only one dealing with these. Also happy to know that other people deal with it worse (sorry). Gonna take a trip to the ENT soon. Not happy to read that folks who get their tonsils out still get them. Oh well.

I have had these for a while now and i just found out what they were a few minutes ago. I had no idea that there was a condition like this. I thought i was the only person with this problem.

Haha this forum is cracking me up! the stories are hilarious!
When I first saw these little things in my tonsil crypts I thought they were parasite eggs but after getting one out and crushing it, saw they weren't eggs but to my horror smelled horrendous...I recently noticed that once you've got em out and leave em out to dry (like a few hrs to a day), they shrink and harden and stop smelling, anyone know why that is?

guest commented on 02 May 2008, 12:26:16
hey guys....i took some of your advice and bought a water pik...however I dont know how I would use this to remove the white balls....please let me know

I have been laughing so hard I cried, especially about the guy who makes his cat smell them. This "affliction" is really getting to me. I can feel them in there all the time and while I would absolutely love to get rid of them for good it is quite satisfying to pop them out and see how big and smelly they are.

guest commented on 04 May 2008, 02:56:40
POSSIBLE CURE - I had these gross things years ago and eventually realised I got them whenever I drank milk. Consequently I stopped having milk in tea/coffee etc and cut right back on dairy products. After that I never had them again and to this day I only have black coffee and tea. Try it and it may work for you too. Anything to get rid of them is worth trying.

guest commented on 04 May 2008, 19:06:45
I've always been told my tonsils are tiny, but I get these things all the time...have since I was in high school...never tried some of your tools for removing, I stick to q-tips and pressure. Don't think I'm brave enough to shove a nail file in there. Had them for years but this is the first time I decided to look into what they actually were. Unless the get really big before I notice them, they don't hurt or bleed. I've gotten in ahbit of checking for them on a weekly basis.

I have had tonsil stones for about 3 or 4 years. I just found out they were called tonsil stones 2 months ago. I went to see my doctor to remove my tonsils. He told me he couldnt remove my tonsils just for that reason. He also told me that it would go away when i turn thirty, im now 20.I bought a waterpik, it helps a lot and brushing ur teeth and flossing after each meal helps too. I also started praying for God to make my tonsil stones go away.I pray ever night. Its getting much better i feel that ist going away. Pray guys for God he will help everyone. Good luck for all.

emily commented on 08 May 2008, 19:36:22
So, I've been poking around all night because they tend to come out with one medium-sized chunk, and then a series of smaller stinky particles. I need to hear from someone, though, who can't see them! I poke and prod and screw around up there, and I cannot ever "pop" them out. They just seem to come out after a few weeks of constricting/sucking/coughing/hocking. But the in-between time is awful, and even after one comes out, I'm determined there's more there.
Plus, just now I had my finger back there and made my throat bleed, and I swabbed out what I think is PRE-STONE GOOP. It's not hard, but it's sort-of gelatinous semi-phlegmy and coats the top of my left tonsil.
Can anyone who can't see them give me tips about where the hell they are? I can't feel it specifically at all. I know it's on the left side usually, but I have no idea, I guess, where in my tonsil it is -- or maybe even which part of the back of my throat IS my tonsil. Help.

I'm 15 and its kind of a relief to know that I'm not the only one. I really wish there was a permanent cure, other than a tonsillectomy. I don't really want to tell others about it. It's pretty gross. They smell horrible and often I can feel them in my throat. I take a Q-Tip and I push them out of my tonsils. It's terrible and just sick! I always worry about my breath because of them, too. I'm very cautious about my teeth and tongue and gums because of my breath. But I never really thought about my tonsils being the problem. I really just want to get my tonsils removed. It would be such a relief. Also, I have read a bunch of the comments everyone left. I, too, ONLY get them in my LEFT tonsil. And also, has anyone else already had tonsillitis, because I have had it, but my old doctor said that I didn't need to get them removed...

Im really scared im going to get cancer or something. now my throat is sore and i dont know what to do! i dont want to get them removed, but it think i might have to. The stones smell disgusting! Im so happy to know that i am not alone as well. I just hope that it isnt that serious. I cant believe people have these things for years! How can you have them for that long and not having them removed? its like they are eating away themselves. Its soo gross.

finally! some answers to a questions i've had since i was in grade school. i encounter them by gagging them up. like i'll sort of flutter it out of my throat, into my mouth, in my hand and examine it. i can tell when they are coming because my breath just "feels" gross, the inside of my mouth tastes very strange. then i just sort of gag it up. i always thought it was coming from my throat, i didn't realize it was directly from the tonsils. i've gotten more of them the last few years (i'm 30 now) and so recently i googled a description of "hard green phlem" and came up with more than few sites. i got the term tonsil stones from one of these sites and came up with this one. i have never had one actually lodged into my mouth. at least not in a fashion in which i had to stick something in my mouth to take it out. that would seem a bit painful. i am very self conscience when i talk to people because of them and almost ALWAYS have breath mints and strong chewing gum to help combat the problem of my bad breath. does anyone else have the breath problem possibly from these tonsil stones?

OMG!!! I HAVE NEVER TOLD ANYONE OF MY PROBLEM BCUZ I WAS IMBARASSED OF WHAT ANYONE WOULD SAY. I ALSO THOUGH IT WAS SOME SORT OF DISEASE AND DID NOT WANT ANYONE TO KNOW. I HAVE BEEN HAVING THESE FOR QUITE SOME TIME NOW. THE FIRST TIME I FOUND ONE I WENT TO THE DR CUZ I THOUGHT I HAD STREP THROAT, MY TONSILS WERE SWOLLEN, I HAD A SORE THROAT, AND I HAD YOUR TYPICAL WHITE POCKETS ON YOUR TONSILS THAT IS LIKE A DEAD SIGN OF STREP. THE DR DID A STREP SCREEN AND IT WAS NEG., I WAS DX WITH TONSILLITS. A DAY OR TWO LATER, THIS WHITE POCKET WAS ON MY TONGUE.......GROSS !!!!! I SPIT IT OUT AND YES, IT WAS YELLOWISH, WHITISH, MAYBE EVEN A HINT OF LITE GREEN, I DON'T KNOW, IT COULD HAVE BEEN MY IMAGINATION....SO I, LIKE ALL YOU OTHERS, TOOK A WIFF.......UGGGGGG!!!!!!!! I THOUGHT I WAS LITTERALY DIEING AND MY BODY WAS STARTING TO ROUGHT, BEGINING WITH MY THROAT! WELL I HAVE CONTINUED TO HAVE THESE ON AND OFF AND TODAY I DECIDED TO GOOGLE TONSILS AND THE FIRST THING THAT CAME UP WAS TONSIL STONES-YELLOWISH WHITISH....... OMG-THAT IS WHAT I HAVE. NOW I JUST NEED A CURE, BUT I MUST SAY, I ALREADY FEEL BETTER NOWING I AM BY NO MEANS ALONE....LET'S FIGHT THESE BUGARS...LITERALY

I've been afflicted since about age 10. I thought there was something wrong with me. I have always been told I had bad breath. If you have tonsil stones, you have bad breath. I use a toothpick to remove them. I have also tried using a long curved syringe but haven't had much success with that - it's hard not to get fluid down your throat. I have also used my finger to exude what is what I thin is the fluid which makes the stone in the first place. I start at the top of the tonsil and squeeze it out. It's a white-ish fluid which I am sure makes the stone as it sits in the crypt. I feel I have been cursed and am quite anti social as a result. When you see someone your talking to covering their mouth, you know you've offended them. I hate this shit.

Deron commented on 31 May 2008, 08:32:51
Everyone with tonsils will get these but most people swallow them without knowing...we are the lucky few who understand and get them out without unknowingly swallowing them which is worse in my opinion. Once you learn how to put a little presse on your tonsil area with a q-tip or the back of your toothbrush it's not a problem at all.

I've had this problem as long as I can remember. Recently it got a lot worse and one day I found them in a different place on my tonsils! Usually they appear in the same few "caves" and I know what to expect. This time my whole tonsil swole up and went hard...I finally dislodged the one I could feel with my tongue and I was finding more and more in there all day. I can feel that same tonsil swelling again...and i'm not looking forward to this event.
The first person i ever told was my boyfriend of almost three years. He replied that if he ever felt anything when kissing me he would throw up in my mouth.
Great! Maybe i will just get my tonsils out...quit dealing with this crap.
I do worry though...is the reason we get these because our immune system is working well? If i get rid of my tonsils am i going to be ill all the time for the rest of my life???

I am SO glad to find this site! I really thought I was alone. I also figured I was dying of some sort of infection or something. I was too embarrassed to see a dr., thinking "Well, maybe it's old food or something?"
But that smell! UGH!
Finally I ended up telling my brother about it, who jokingly said I was "my own Pez dispenser". LOL
He calls them "Making pearls". ROTFL.
What can ya do but laugh, right?
So FINALLY it has a name and i'm NOT going to die after all. Thanks tonsilstones.net!!
You def. ROCK!

LoL so i'm not alone after all! I also get these white-yellowish small globs about once a week and indeed they smell like poo. I have had my tonsils removed when I was young but unfortunately, I'm still plagued with them. They appear to only come from one side where the cavity seems deepest. I suffer from post-nasal drainage so I imagine that might have something to do with it.

Just like pretty much everybody else on here, i thought i had cancer or some kind of calcium build-up. I only got them on my left tonsil for about a year and just today I got 2 on the other side...so i thought i better google "white formations on the inside of the throat" and I was soooooo relieved to see that others have this! My boyfriend thought it was so gross, he just kept telling me to brush my teeth more that I wasn't cleaning the roof of my mouth good enough but i brush my teeth like 4 times a day! So, i'm going to try some of these remedies now. thank goodness!!!

My left tonsil has white spots on it but where the white stuff is its kind of sunken into my tonsil, and i t mildly hurts to swallow.
I tried to wipe it off with a cotton swab, but it didn't move. And when I looked at the swab after I wipe my tonsil on it it was reddish orangiy yellowish.
I hav no idea.
It could be a tonsil stone. They sound fun.
My right tonsil is the same size, but doesn't look like a pink and white cauliflower, but it does have a red line across it, it looks like a cut or something it doesn't hurt.

I have suffered from these nasty critters [tonsil stones] for years. I just accepted that I would always have them. However, since using the tonsil stone remedy I learned about on tonsilstones.net, I have not experienced even one tonsil stone.
