Pictures of Tonsil Stones

Tonsil stones can be very annoying. If you have found your way to this site then you may already know what having tonsil stones is like. In either case, it's safe to say you do not want to get them. I have not yet met anyone who was excited about getting tonsil stones. The purpose of this article is to help those of you who are still trying to figure out if that nasty white ball in your throat is in fact a tonsil stone.

In this diagram, you'll notice the locations of the tongue, adenoids, tonsils etc. These items have been labeled for reference. If the white ball you are experiencing is located in the area of the tonsils, then it's most likely a tonsil stone.

These photos give you an idea of what tonsil stones look like after being removed.

I too have suffered from tonsil stones.  It was some time before I located a remedy that worked for me.  You may need to try different things before successfully ridding yourself of these annoying things.  I went for several years before discovering Dr. Katz' tonsil stone remedy

Be sure to see the other articles on this site for information on removing tonsil stones and prevention of tonsil stones.

Thank you to California Breath Clinics, and Wikipedia for the above images.

Wow. All I can say is WOW. I have had tonsil stones for years now and I recently discovered what they were. I can't believe so many people go thru the same thing. I truly thought I was alone. Everytime I coughed one up and showed my husband he looked at me like I was an alien from another planet. And the smell, oh gosh the smell. And my breath lately has been ridiculously stink which has prompted me to look further into this. I am going to the ENT next week to get a nasal flush and have the doc pop these suckers out. I tried myself but now my throat is irritatingly sore in addition to these poo popping peas in my mouth. Cathy you are right. We need a support group for people like us...lol

I have been getting tonsil stones for about 10 years now and I never knew exactly what they were until now. I get them more so when I am sick, but usually get about 3-4 a week. It really all depends though. Sometimes I get an itchy feeling on my tonsils and thats when I know one is popping out. Other times I just cough them up. If I have one in the back of the throat I usually take it out with a fingernail or something small and sharp like a bobby pin, toothpick, or even my toothbrush sometimes. They do smell, but not as bad if you don't burst them. Q-tips do not work for me. I have also thought about taking my tonsils out, but after doing research I realized that my tonsils help me and they are only doing their job. Besides prescribed medicine or other sprays people are selling, try just gargling some mouth wash and warm salt water... No matter what, you will get these, its just how your tonsils work. However, there are many ways you can make it so it doesn't affect your breath. Like brushing correctly, scraping your tongue, gargling mouthwash, flossing, and also removing your stones when you first notice them. They are harmless.

I also have had these for years. They seem to be harder and harder to get out on the right side. The past week I have felt a large one at base of my throat and can't get it out. Yesterday I started getting an earache that feels directly related to the tonsil stone. I am scared that alll the poking, prodding and pressing I have done has crumbled and pushed it into places it should not go and is now causing the earache. Has anyone had this experience before?

guest commented on 09 Feb 2008, 00:52:36
Not to gross you guys out. But I just got sick recently, and then my throat started to sore up. When I checked the first time they were just swollen. When I looked a second time, I could see that I had a pack of brown tonsil stones on my left tonsil. I took some out but there are still a lot left. I just found out today by searching the web and is deciding to talk to my parents about getting my tonsils removed if i can't get them out soon enoug. Oh and it's hard for me to eat and swallow

Jackie commented on 14 Feb 2008, 10:45:35
I had these for about a year. I had my tonsils out at age 37. Wow, was that horrible...but it totally cured me. I used to get them stuck in my throat and go insane feeling them there. Now my 15 year old son has them. (Always the mothers fault!) We go see the ENT tomorrow! He can put away the Qtips now hopefully. I hate those smelly balls of Poo!!!

Jeff commented on 14 Feb 2008, 20:23:39
These things are really starting to annoy me. I used to cough them up years ago but never really payed attention to them. Just thought it was from something I ate. But about last year I started noticing them. It happened one morning when I woke up and felt something on my throat. I had to use my finger to pull it out. Now they are coming more frequently. It used to be at least once a month I'd see one(they only appear on my right tonsil btw) and I'd just pluck it out with a q-tip. Just two days ago I pluck one out now I check and theres another small one. I really wish I knew what do do because I'm tired of plucking them out. I mean I brush regularly, gargle with Listerine and everything but still get them. I may try the Therabreath stuff and see if that helps. I can't afford to get my tonsils removed. Just thinking about them makes me itch lol.

Jessica commented on 16 Feb 2008, 01:58:37
I'm amazed that I found this website. Wow I'm 20 and I've been dealing with these things for ever! Just today I got a small toothbrush handle and squeezed my tonsil and four came out. I did it again and heard a popping cracking sound and a ton of blood came gushing out. eekk. I gargled with warm salt water and its stopped most the bleeding. I'm going to try some of the methods mentioned. Be carful when sticking things in your throat, I hope I didn't make my problem worse. I hate it and still haven't told my BF of three years. Finaly I know what it is and what to do. THANK YOU!

Scood commented on 17 Feb 2008, 20:53:47
Oh my gosh. People you have got to go to a breath doctor. They do have them. I went to one in San Francisco. I think you can go on badbreath.com (hmmm... cant remember) Anyhow they got me on Tri-Oral products. I now order them from QVC. It's been years since my diagnosis and I have tried many of the Tri-Oral competitors but I think Tri-Oral is the best. Seriously it changed my life. I don't think I have even had a stone since starting on the product. If you cant find a breath doctor (I think they are dentists that specialize in halitosis) you may just want to go to the Tri-oral website and ask them to help you locate a doctor or dentist. These dentists have breath meters and everything. It was the best money I've ever spent. Life changing

Scood commented on 17 Feb 2008, 21:11:01
I just looked on the net and found freshbreath.ca I am sure they can help you all with the breath issues from tonsil stones. I have never been to them nor spoke to them but it looks like they specialize in this sort of thing. The Dentist I saw many years ago (cant remember his name) did most of the same stuff and cured me for life. Good Luck.

Ugh for the longest time I had no idea what these craps were about and then I just decided to look it up on the internet tonight at 2:30 AM and assumed I would get no results of course because I had no idea what to call them.. and low and behold, here I am.. incomprehensibly relieved that this is a problem many more than just I face.. what a terrible horrible psychotically unfortunate problem, eh? Well, so thank you everyone for informing me of where these actually come from..and how to get them out. I just now got a bunch and have never ever known where they came from to begin with.. this is disgusting, but sorta awesome as well. God how I hate this problem.. maybe tonsils out IS the answer.. : (

guest commented on 22 Feb 2008, 19:53:50
I had my tonsils removed 30 years ago, so was perplexed when my friend told me that I probably had tonsil stones. (I thought she was making it up!) But what you all are describing is exactly what I have just recently (and for the first time to my knowledge) experienced. In the past couple of days I've had about 4 come out - 2 with a Q-Tip, and 2 just by themselves. I only smelled one of them, and even though I can't say that is smelled like poo, it didn't smell pleasant either. The pictures look identical to what came out of my mouth. So, even though I had my tonsils removed, I believe I have some remnants of tonsils (my dentist told me this) and this was enough to get the tonsil stones.

Bleh! commented on 25 Feb 2008, 14:56:35
I'm from Norway. I just got aquainted with these little buggers the other day. I saw this white little lump in the back of my throat, and thought it was a piece of oatmeal or a seed or something like that that my toothbrush hadn't gotten. I tried gargling it loose with water, but it wouldn't budge, so I thought the oatmeal/whatever was stuck to the skin. So I cleaned my hands and tried to pick at the oatmeal with my finger. Suddenly this pea size lump pops out, just as my finger touches the "oatmeal". I was absolutely shocked! Not what I expected. It smelled awful too, ugh.
Apparently, according to the Norwegian sites I found about this thing, mouthwash containing Chlorhexidine is supposed to help. I actually started using one such mouthwash on the morning of the day when the stone popped out, so maybe it was actually just... cleaning it out of there, or something. Since I've never seen those things before. My breath's been WAY better after it happened anyway!

Bleh! commented on 25 Feb 2008, 15:25:03
Oh, but chlorhexidine mouthwashes may cause some discoloration of tongue and teeth. My dentist once tipped me to water it out just a little bit when taking it, in order to avoid discoloration. It worked back then, so that's what I'm doing now.
I also noticed that someone here said their stones tend to come loose when they're swimming. If they're swimming in a pool, there might be chlorine in the water. Chlorine is an antiseptic. Chlorhexidine obviously contains Chlorine. Mouthwash containing Chlorhexidine is recommended over here, and it seems to have provoked my stones to finally "leave the nest".
I don't know, but maybe there's a connection there.

I dealt with tonsil stones for about 6 years now (I was 24). I think I may have always had them down in my throat but one day they popped up in the back of my throat and I thought I had strep throat until one flew out of my mouth when i SNEEZED!! and then after time they got bigger and bigger and the smell was abosolutely horrible. I dont think I had bad breath but having something that rank smelling in your throat cant make it smell good - so I was very self concious. I got really good at removing them myself but I wanted them GONE. Then I finally found a great doctor that explained thouroghly what they were and said that she would remove my tonsils. I had them removed TODAY (yay!!) even though i am a little pain now I finally got my mouth opened up enough I could look in with a mirror to see what was going on in there. It looks REALLY BAD IN THERE I see the tonsil stones everywhere and it is freaking me out. i am going to call the doctor tomorrow to see what she thought of the surgery. i am thinking that they will fall off since there are no more crevasses and I will never see them again. i will keep you posted . . .

Patty commented on 29 Feb 2008, 10:03:16
Can I tell you I am serious when I tell you all if you have to do is use this mouth certain mouthwash you will NEVER have them again. Please try it and post it when you see the difference. It is the end of bad breath and tonsil stones. If I run out of it sure enough in a few days I have a stone and stinky stinky breath!!!
It'a called Profresh you can only buy it online or at the doctor's office in Phildelphia who invented it. I get nothing for telling you about this stuff I am telling you it is the true cure. When you have bad breath it effects you in everyway. The website is...
http://www.profresh.com/
you don't need to get the expensive start set just order the mouthwash. you have to click order online and then you HAVE to click returning customers to be able to buy single bottles. I now buy a case and my mom and family chip in for the shipping and I get the free bottle when you buy 12 :) We all use it in our family even my 9 year old son. It sounds expensive but I have been using it for 14 years! And I would pay anything to not have bad breath. They also give you a free tounge scraper when you get a case. That also helps with bad breath if you have a white coating on your tounge which I also had.
One last thing you will be shocked to hear since I have starting using this I went from having min. 3 cavities everytime I went to the dentist to not one in 14 years!
And my teeth are so white. I never using anything but profresh no whiting strips.
Trust me you will be back to post your story so other people see that it is amazing stuff.
What do you have to lose except your tonsil stones and bad breath!

i think it is from smoking, not brushing/flossing and or illnesses.

I am just glad I found out the real name for them... I have had them as long as I can remember. They smell horrible... I have to remove them with q-tips and there can be large amounts sometimes.

Marie commented on 04 Mar 2008, 11:57:23
I had a tonsillectomy two years ago to remedy those nasty things! When my tonsils would become infected with them, they would turn red and swell. Sometimes, my tonsils would even block my air passage! So, my doctor recommended I have them removed. I was 27 then, and went through the surgery and recovery just fine. I used to get a flashlight and pointed-tip tweezer to get the stones out - they were so uncomfortable and gross. Good luck to anyone suffering with them. I recommend surgery - it was such a relief!

ADZZZZ commented on 04 Mar 2008, 12:18:30
I use a flat head screwdriver to get these fuckers out.

Geoff commented on 05 Mar 2008, 19:56:50
I hear you all! Another note....if you don't floss, those back teeth smell the same too! Get the floss out of the drawer and into the crevasses. Same as brushing your tongue and SIDES of your mouth. (if you don't regularly floss and brush your tongue, smell your floss the first time....NASTY poo smell...same as your tooth brush after a tongue brush ...do a DRY brush on the tongue then smell it!..) You will add this regular maintenance to your oral routine! Keep on SQUEEZING!

I'm 24 and I've been getting these things since I was a little kid. It took me a while trying to find any information about them on the internet because I didn't even really know where to start as far as search terms go! Now I know this is strange, but I'm oddly fascinated by them.. Yeah they're a little annoying. But I found that with a flashlight and a q-tip, I can pop them out in no time.

DJ, thank you so much for the detailed visual!! It took me about 20 minutes to read your post because I have been laughing histerically!!! I am just now wiping the tears away from my eyes. I am just so glad I am not alone out there with these things in my throat. They are a pain!

i get these occasionally, but they usually come out without poking or prodding them, if you move your neck a certain way you will feel it in the back of your throat, and then you hawk it up to the front of your mouth, but you can like never swallow them, they just like stick in your throat, and i just had a dream i coughed up one of these, like the size of a hamburger, effin sick...

Wow! I'm not sure if I enjoy reading all these comments from other follow members who own those annoying stinky balls of crap or just like getting those smelly rocks out from my tonsils too. First and foremost, when I see or feel one of those pesky critters, I make sure before anything else that day, that it comes out. I poke and squeeze until I get results. I get so sick in the process that I am almost puking. I can't stand the way they smell. I've often wondered if I was the only one to have this problem and now I see that I'm not and it helps. One thing is for sure, I sure hope that this isn't what causes bad breath that smells like crap....
Anyway, I've laughed my head off reading all these comments! I'm most humored at DJ's comment left on 1-17-08!!! HAHA!

Amanda Again... commented on 13 Mar 2008, 21:37:11
Just the thought of mistaking this stinky ball as a miscellaneous piece of food particle in my mouth suddenly and then clamping down on it and starting to chew it to sallow it makes me extremely nauseous.....
I really hate trying to dig one of them out! I never can grab hold one them anyway, they usually run from the utensil I use! It just makes me sick!!!! YUCK STINKY YUCK!!!!

Amanda one more time commented on 13 Mar 2008, 21:48:26
Oh and another thought came to mind-I would be devastated to know that one of those critters came out in my mouth and I had no idea and chewed it into my gum!!!!!! UGGGGG!

My girlfriend sometimes gets tonsils stones. We've found that the best way to remove them is for me to vigorously massage them with the glans, which eventually frees them up.

This cheese has been coming up for me for 10 years or so. Once a month for sure sometimes twice. If I suction my tongue on the roof of my mouth or even over my upper teeth and exhale out of my nose I can taste it.
It gets to a certain size and dislodges.I've mashed it up in my fingers and about passed out from the odor kind of like decay and shit mixed. The light bulb was over my head today and I googled id and here I am,in good company : ) it looks exactly like the picture with the ruler,so small and wicked stench !

ROB commented on 20 Mar 2008, 10:32:06
Has anyone ever tried eliminating Caffiene from their diet to stop these? I discovered the connection after drinking about 8 diet cokes one day, then late in the day I got the sore throat and multiple stones the next day! I then slowly came off the coffee, diet soda, etc. and I helped a LOT! I think this may help other too! The doctor appointments were already set EN&T Spec., so I still went. He claimed that they were caused by food particles getting in the lymph dump holes (adenoids) behind the tonsils, where these stones form. He stated that it had nothing to do with caffeine. I then had tonsils removed. To this day I am off caffeine, and if I drink even 1/2 a soda or coffee, I get the death breath and the adenoids start to feel like they are forming the stones again! IT IS WORTH A TRY TO GET OFF CAFFEINE FOR A WEEK OR TWO! If it doesn't cure the problem, it certainly may help. It may be just me, but I think that it is some form of allergy to caffeine, (or something else in the diet). This would make sense, since the "white stones" are clumps of dead white blood cells that the lymph system has picked up around the body and it dumping in the throat for disposal. THEORY NO. 1 = The allergy (to ingesting caffeine) may stimulate an increase in the white blood cells to "fight off" the alergic response. THEORY NO. 2 = The allergy to caffeine may irritate the adenoids directly or indirectly and cause swelling which constricts the natural flow - causing the buildup of dead white blood cells and that causes more to build up until it has clumps.
I tend to believe that it is a combination of these two theories plus any infections the body is fighting off, that starts the buildup and from their the stones restrict the flow - causing more buildup. LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK, AND IF THIS INFO HELPS ANYONE!
Good Luck! Rob.

Well, here I am. 7:00 AM after my nightshift, searching for what the hell just came out of my throat. I coughed 2 cottage cheese chunks out of my throat when I got home, and later saw they came out of small holes in my tonsils. So I came here to see if I had cancer, infection, or whatever. Turns out I'm not alone!! I remember coughing these things up previously, even as a child, but always thought it was just , well, cottage cheese pieces. I can go to bed now, knowing it's just a bacterial buildup of decomposed food bits festering in my throat. Yay. I've had a sore throat for YEARS (10-15), and just recently got over strep throat, probably caused by these little bastards in my tonsils. Now I guess I'll be spending more time in front of the mirror, making gagging faces trying to dislodge these things in an attempt to alleviate my sore throat. Hopefully there's only one or two, but someone wrote having 15 or more in each tonsil??!!? Hopefully I can qualify, at the age of 28, for a tonsillectomy. Oh well, one last look in the mirror before going to bed. Take care!!

i'll never forget that dreadful day when i made that decision to smush that "thing" that just came out of my tonsils. smushing is one thing, but i find myself asking "why did i have to go and smell it?" today the "mother load" came out, a family big enough to fill a teaspoon. this is by far the biggest group i have evicted from their home. and right before i wash them down the drain, i do two things....i smush them, and then i smell them. i know what they smell like, so why do i keep smelling them? is this just a guy thing, kinda like smelling your farts? not b/c you think it smells pleasant, but b/c your man enough to say, "dang, that stinks like $hyt." yeah, the q-tip works good, just massage your tonsils starting at the bottom when you see one sticking out. i think i'll start taking a more gentle approach instead of almost coughing and gagging my guts up. glad to know what they are 5 years later.

Frumpmom04 commented on 24 Mar 2008, 13:33:50
I haven't laughed this hard in a long time. I get them occasionally, I can't ever feel them coming on, they just come when I cough or sneeze. It is the most unexplainably gross thing!!! Here I thought I could possibly be dying of lung cancer! I feel so much better knowing so many people have them

I have spoken with numerous doctors about my tonsil stones. No one will take them out. I am 34. I have had them since I was a child. I read that you have to just leave them alone and let the crypts close up. I wish the doctors would realize this is a major problem that affects our lives. I am afraid to talk at work becasue I know my breath is kickin.

Elizabeth commented on 26 Mar 2008, 01:42:57
I've had these things for about 2 years now and I never thought anything of it until my boyfriend kept telling me that I had horrible breath, even if I had JUST brushed my teeth! So I went to the dentist and they had no idea what I was talking about. They just sent me home with a tongue scraper! One day I finally found a way to get them out, and it was so gross.. I took a Q tip and put pressure on it from the bottom moving up and they all popped out! I'm actually saving them on a Kleenex every time I get them out, so when I go to the Ear, Nose and Throat doctor I can show them what is going on in my throat. I want my tonsils removed so badly. I used to get them on my right tonsil only, but they went away and now they are all on my left tonsil. I have to admit that it has become pretty fun to sit in front of the mirror and poke them out to see how many I can come up with and how big they get. I can tell when I have them too because I can smell them from my nose, and it really stinks... I never realized anyone else could smell them until my boyfriend kept telling me how bad it was...now I'm so self conscious.. I just want these tonsils out of my body! I hope it cures them. Glad I'm not alone on this.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. I have had them since I was 12. My friends used to call them creatures. You can also get laser surgery and avoid having your tonsils removed. I plan to do this soon. I know two boyfriends have left me becuase of my breath. Enough is enough.

The worst experience is when one or parts of these balls decides to loosen and jump into your mouth while you are talking to someone or in public. It's like, jeez, now this gross stink ball is rolling around in my mouth - yuck! Also, I get really slimmy snot that I am either snorting down or sticks to my throat so I am always grunting it up to loosen. Now I realize that may have something to do with this.

!!--BEST ADVICE--!! commented on 27 Mar 2008, 16:37:51
Here's how i got rid of my tonsil stone.
The best tool available: your own finger!
I found the best way to remove them is to first get a good light source and a mirror so you can clearly see exactly where the little buggers are. You might need to tense ur mouth muscles up (simulating the throwing up pose) to see down into the depths of ur Tonsillar arches to spot the little critters.
Once you have located the target you now have a reasonably good idea where to poke ur finger (lol). This next bit takes practise and a bit of patience especially for those who have strong and voilent gag reflexes. If ur having trouble, it's better to get ur mouth used to the poking sensation 1st before diving in and attempting to push the bastards out.
Now, once you have got used to the reflex you can focus on controling the position of your finger. You will find that certain areas hurt more when put under pressure. You want to avoid these ideally. The chances are if it is hurting, then you are probably forcing the stones further into the crypts which is not good. Try to aim underneath or around the edge of the stone and slowly but quite firmly push towards the centre of it. If your finding the pain a bit too much, stop, gargle with salty warm water and try again in a few minutes. Keep trying and eventually it WILL come out. You'll feel so relieved when it comes out it will definately feel like all this teddious poking was worth it.
Have a good one... and good luck people xx

I'm soooo glad i found this site!!! I was about 2 go crazy!!! I've been having this problem since i was 15. I wish i would've found this site sooner. I went to a doctor when i was 18 to see what this was and my doctor (at the time) didn't know what i was talking about. I tried saving 1 or 2 just to show what they look like, but they ended up getting hard and a dark color. I didn't know you could see them when they come. I have experienced a sore tonsil from coughing them up at times. I'm shocked that i'm not alone in this situation. I know they are coming because of da foul smell from the back of my mouth, a bad taste, tightness by my ear and my ear itches like crazy. I scratch my ear for a good 20mins or even longer. This site has been very helpful. I will be trying to get my tonsils removed because i don't wish to have this any longer. Lol! I don't wish this on anybody. Best of luck, everybody! I found my answer, i hope u did/do, too. Take care!

I must be gross because I get excited when I get a big one. I pop it out and then mush it in a tissue and then I can't resist smelling it. They always smell the same--totally disgusting. I don't know why I do this. I also like to squeeze out the plugs of waxy dead skin cells that collect in the skin follicles sometimes. Human bodies are loads of fun!

Yes, they are gross! I remember being very young and having them, I was afraid to tell anyone about them, how weird.
I often get them if I am feeling alittle under the weather. As I usually "feel" better after they are gone, I thought they were my body's way of getting out the bad, like my lymphatic system pushes this junk, out the closest orafice. Nobody I know has ever mentioned having them-not like it's a topic of conversation at the supper table.

I hate these gross little things.
I know when Im about to get one because someone will tell me that I have really bad breath about a day before they actually show up.
They make my throat hurt more than anything, and they make me want to puke.
I hate when they become dislodged even more than when they are attatching themselves to my tonsils, because I usually dont notice until I bite into it, and taste the discustiing thing.

I have suffered from these nasty critters [tonsil stones] for years. I just accepted that I would always have them. However, since using the tonsil stone remedy I learned about on tonsilstones.net, I have not experienced even one tonsil stone.
